A man is wanted for licking a woman’s foot in a sexual assault and thefts that targeted women in two Richmond Hill tanning salons this past week, York Regional Police said Saturday.
A man asked a woman “if he could see her shoe as he was shopping for shoes for a relative” at a tanning salon — located at Yonge St. and 16th Ave. — on Wednesday around 3:45 p.m., police said.
“When she complied, the suspect smelled her shoe and then fled with it,” police said.
The next day, just after 11 a.m., a man asked a woman about her boots in a tanning salon near Yonge St. and Canyon Hill Ave.
“The suspect then grabbed the victim’s leg, removed her boot and sock and licked her foot without her consent,” police said.
He took the boot and sock and left the salon, police said. No one suffered any injuries.
A woman who works at the tanning salon in the second incident answered the phone Saturday and said she was summoned from the back of the salon when she heard screams from the customer.
“She was screaming, asking for help,” said the employee, who did not want to give her name.
She said she had never seen the suspect before and hopes police will catch him soon.
“If we ever see something strange, we’ll call police,” she said.
York Regional Police’s special victims unit is investigating the two incidents. Police believe the man may be responsible for “other similar incidents.”
Surveillance images of the suspect, who is described as a white fair-skinned man, around 30 years old, 5-foot-8 and 170 pounds with a medium build, have been released by police. He has short reddish-brown hair and a neatly trimmed beard, and was last seen wearing a black bomber jacket, black dress pants, and brown leather boots with brown laces, police said.
Anyone who can identify the man should call investigators at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7071, or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Serial foot-licker on lam: Cops

BARRIE, Ont. — A man is wanted for at least four foot-related sexual assaults against women at Ontario tanning salons, police said.
City police say a man entered a Barrie, Ont., tanning salon at 3:15 p.m. Thursday and spoke to a female employee.
He drew her attention to her footwear, then dropped down to all fours, grabbed her leg and began licking her foot without her consent, police said.
The man fled the scene; the employee was not injured.
"It's a serious offence," Barrie Const. Melanie Turner said, noting three police forces are working together to find this man. "It's a sexual assault."
He is described as white, about 30 years old and 170 lbs, with short reddish-brown hair and a neatly trimmed beard.
The man was wearing a black pea coat-style jacket.
"The public is pretty helpful in helping us find out who people are," Turner said.
City police say this man also might be responsible for other, similar attacks in Barrie.
These type of incidents have also been reported to South Simcoe police and York Regional police.
On Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., a man entered Adam and Eve Tanning Salon in Alcona, Ont.
While being shown a tanning room, a man sexually assaulted the lone female clerk, police said. She was not injured.
A man immediately left the building in an unknown direction.
The suspect is described as white, age 25 to 30, with brown/blond medium-length hair and a brown beard.
He was well-groomed, wearing a black pea coat and blue jeans, along with a grey, diamond-patterned sweater.
His image was captured on security footage, police said.
In Toronto at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, York Regional Police say a man entered a tanning salon, approached a woman, asked if he could see her shoe and claimed to be shopping for shoes for a relative.
When she gave him her shoe, the man smelled it and then fled, police said.
On Thursday, just after 11 a.m., a man entered a tanning salon in Toronto. He approached a woman and began asking questions about her boots.
Police say the man then grabbed the female's leg, removed her boot and sock, and licked her foot without her consent.
He then fled with her boot and sock. She was not injured.
"We know from experience that if you don't need consent to be licking a woman's leg, you're more than likely not going to be asking consent for doing anything else that could be leading to a more dangerous crime,” Haily MacDonald, spokeswoman for Athena's Sexual Assault Counselling and Advocacy Centre, said.
No physical injuries don't mean there wasn't damage done to these women, she added.
"Nobody has been physically hurt. However, psychologically, what is that saying to the women in Barrie? The fact that a woman in a tanning salon gets her leg licked," she said. "That's what I mean when I speak to limiting mobility."

Man charged with sex assault in alleged foot-licking
By Maryam Shah, Toronto Sun First posted: Thursday, November 27, 2014 12:02 PM EST | Updated: Thursday, November 27, 2014 05:33 PM EST
A man accused of licking a woman’s foot in one of a series of recent sexual assaults and thefts — targeting women’s feet and footwear in tanning salons — surrendered to police Wednesday.

The arrest was a “direct result of media coverage and tips from the public,” York Regional Police said Thursday.

The man is accused of involvement in “multiple sexual assaults involving feet and thefts of footwear from York Region, Innisfil, Bradford and Barrie,” police said.

South Simcoe Police and Barrie Police also aided in the investigation.

York police first put out a call for public assistance last week after a man licked a woman’s foot and stole her boot at a Richmond Hill tanning salon. Prior to that, a man smelled a woman’s shoe before stealing it at another Richmond Hill tanning salon, police said.

“As the investigation progressed, similar incidents were reported at tanning salons in Aurora, Innisfil and Bradford,” York cops said.

Barrie Police said last weekend a similar incident occurred last week at a Barrie tanning salon. A man entered the salon and began talking to a female worker.

“The suspect drew her attention to her footwear and then dropped down on all fours, grabbed the employee’s leg and removed her footwear and then began licking her foot without her consent,” Barrie Police alleged.

A suspect surrendered himself to York cops — without a lawyer — on Wednesday afternoon.

Const. Andy Pattenden said the case was a first for him in his career.

“It is bizarre,” he said.

Feedback on social media about the allegations prompted Pattenden to clarify how the incidents resulted in sexual assault charges.

“It is of a sexual nature, it’s unwanted touch in many cases, it is sexual assault,” he said. “So it’s not just, ‘So what, the guy just touched people’s feet.’”

Police are still asking people with any reports of similar incidents to come forward.

“It’s important that people do report these things, even if they might be embarrassed about it or they felt it was minor in nature,” Pattenden said.

Mattieu Petrin, 28, of Innisfil, is charged with four counts of sexual assault, three counts of theft under $5,000, sexual interference with a person under the age of 16, and robbery.

Anyone with information can call York Regional Police at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7071.
