A 26-year-old man has been arrested for several hate-motivated assaults at TTC stations.

Toronto Police allege the incidents happened between April 9 and April 11 at three different subway stations.

On April 9, around 8:45 a.m., officers responded to Christie Station for a report a man had spit on another person on the eastbound platform and then took off.

On April 11, at 11:12 a.m., police were called to Lansdowne Station where a man spat on a woman and yelled racial slurs. The man also threatened a bystander who tried to intervene before fleeing on an eastbound train.

Then, about an hour later, police received a report that a man had spit on a woman at Wellesley Station and then fled.

Police launched an investigation and the service’s Specialized Hate Crime Unit determined the incidents to be hate crimes.

A suspect was identified and subsequently arrested on Wednesday.

Joseph O’Sullivan Martinez, of Toronto, is charged with two counts of causing a disturbance, four counts of assault, 10 counts of failing to comply with probation, and five counts of breach of recognizance.

Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to contact police at 416-808-1100 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
