In politics, right-wing, the political right or simply the right, are terms that refer to the segment of the political spectrum often associated with any of several strains of conservatism, the religious right, and areas of classical liberalism, or simply the opposite of left-wing politics.
The term originates from the French Revolution, when liberal deputies from the Third Estate generally sat to the left of the president's chair, a habit which began in the Estates General of 1789. The nobility, members of the Second Estate, generally sat to the right. In the successive legislative assemblies, monarchists who supported the Ancien Régime were commonly referred to as rightists because they sat on the right side. It is still the tradition in the French Assemblée Nationale for the representatives to be seated left-to-right (relative to the Assemblée president) according to their political alignment.

Centrism
In politics, centrism usually refers to the political ideal of promoting moderate policies which land in the middle ground between different political extremes. Most commonly, this is visualized as part of the one-dimensional political spectrum of Left-Right politics, with centrism landing in the middle between left-wing politics and right-wing politics. However, there is arguably more than one dimension to politics, so even the centre has its own radicals as exemplified by radical centrist politics.

There are some things,
like medicare, and the rest of the social safety net that are generally attributable to the left wing, however, things are not as black and white as they used to be. People who are firmly anchored in the right can also espouse medicare and a sensible welfare system, while some on the left might be in favour of the death penalty and tight fiscal policy.

I'll add, the people who tend to think in black and white, us and them, and those on the left who call conservatives fascists, and those on the right who call Social democrats, communist, ten to be the radical, fundamentalists, or as I like to call them, "Priests" of the wings and the centre. It's a lot more common then you think too even in Canada. You find these people in the political parties more often then not, they tend to see all the parties which are not there own in a demonized way while looking at their own party with rose colour glasses.
Those are my two cents and I'm sure a few people may disagree with it..

I don't know I know many Left-Libertarians who'd disagree with that.
Butyeah generally the left is focused more on community and the right generally more on individualism. It totally depends however what area's of the left you are talking about because the Facsist parties were big on community and control but were extremely right wing. So we have a tendacy too over generalize at times.

I spent a short time lurking on a right-wing forum, and realized very quickly that I wasn't one of them. Then I spent some time on a left-wing forum, and realized I wasn't one of them either.

Truth is most Canadians support a public health care system so they're left wing.
Most support people getting a job and working for a living to help support that health care system. So they're right wing.
Most support helping the jobless and disabled so they're left wing.
Most hate welfare cheats, impostors and dropouts so they're right wing.
Most Canadians support protection for the environment so they're left wing.
And most Canucks want cheap energy and easy access to it so they're right wing.
That's why Canada is such a big country: we're all over the map!
