With in the back of my mind the fact that fellow user moghrabi was Lebanese, I did a little search on the Net on the Lebanese Diaspora, and I was stunned! I had NO IDEA there were so many Lebanese people living outside of Lebanon.

Just some numbers (I like numbers):

Brazil has the largest Lebanese community; an astonishing 9 million people, or 6% of the total population, claim Lebanese ancestry. In Sao Paulo alone there are 1 million Lebanese. 10% of all elected politicians in Brazil are of Lebanese descent, and famous Lebanese Brazilians include Brian Peter Medawar (winner of the Nobel Laureate in Medicine in 1960 for the discovery of acquired immunological tolerance) and Ziad Fazah (reportedly the world’s greatest polyglot, who speaks 55 languages);

After that comes the USA, where 3 million people claim to be of Lebanese descent. Among them have been senators, businessman and Hollywoodstars (like Yasmine Bleeth, and Mexican-born Selma Hayek);

Than there is Europe - don't know how many Lebanese live there though, but especially France has a large community;

Canada has 300,000 people of Lebanese descent within its borders; half of them (150,000) live in Montreal. Prominent Lebanese-Canadians include senator Pierre De Bané, councillor of the city of Ottawa Mac Harb and writer Wajdi Mouawad.

And then there is Australia, which has 300,000 inhabitants of Lebanese descent too, mainly in Melbourne and Sydney.

According to my source, 80% of all Lebanese live abroad. Ain't that something! :)

The reason that 80% of Lebanese live outside is because we are traders. W were known as the Phoenicians. We go to no one has gone before.

Fascinating. I forgot that Shakira has Lebanese blood too. And I didn't know Ralph Nader was Lebanese too! Interesting :) I don't know what it is, but I always have the feeling that Diasporas, whether they are Lebanese, Irish, Greek, Jewish or Chinese, have certain secret powers or something, some "magic" ... don't know what it is. What I do know is that I have to visit Lebanon one day :) May I ask you from what part of Lebanon you're from moghrabi?

I have been all over. I also worked in Kuwait and visited all Gulf states. Very nice.

I was not allowed to go to the territories even though I have a Canadian Passport. Told I was born in Lebanon and I am considered a threat. Talk about democracy.

if you are born in Canada you can go anywhere. I nver had problems before. Now I can't even cross the border to the US. Too much hassles and then they turn you back. Last time they searched my brand new car and moved everything inside including the seats. I hated them for it. It is my baby car.

A friend of mine, who is a translator for English, French and Arabic, travelled a lot to Lebanon, and is absolutely in love with Beirut. He thinks of settling there, he says it's great and people are fantastic.

I've read somewhere that Beirut was once considered to be Paris of Middle East, a fashionable city with great culture.

I wonder, would I be allowed to visit the Palestinian Territories, considering I was born in the Netherlands and I am not under the classification of "possible threat"?

Believe it or not, it is back and better than before. It is and always be the Paris of the ME. You go there you forget there is an end to life.

As people being fantastic, well look at me. you don't have to go there to see how fantastic I am. LOL

Yes. You are safe to go through the israeli checkpoints. As long as you keep your mouth shut and do not say anything about the occupation, you will be OK.

As for me I have no chance in hell. My Canadian passpoert says I was born in beirut. So it is a no from the very begining.
