King Charles III has received the keys to Lancaster Castle.

The British Head of State was ceremonially given the keys to the 1000 year old fortress in the Lancastrian city of Lancaster - which is a bit ironic considering that, as monarch, he OWNS Lancaster Castle.

Whilst there, His Majesty met some World War II veterans.

The jaw-dropping 1000 year old building in a beautiful ancient little Lancastrian city has served many purposes over the years. Its previous role was as a prison which closed in 2011. Now, under the protection of English Heritage, it's open to tourists to be taken on guided tours.

Lancaster Castle keys handed to the monarch

Got to love the British and their traditions.

The King has taken part in the Ceremony of the Keys at Lancaster Castle, during which he met a 101-year-old D-Day veteran. The vet told the King about his love for whisky. His Majesty told him "Keep drinking whisky!"

The ceremony at the 1000-year-old Norman building sees the keys ceremonially handed over to the building's owner whenever it gets a new owner - the monarch.

King Charles III took to the Throne in 2022 - and now he's finally given the keys.

Hundreds of well-wishers - and, I dare say, a large armed guard - were out in force as the King received the honour...

The King tells 101-year-old D-Day veteran to "Keep drinking whisky"

A beautiful exchange at Lancaster Castle between the King and a British survivor of the 1944 Normandy Landings.

His Majesty told the hero he is "fantastic."
