I remember watching Ferguson with the old Montreal Canadiens. He is arguably one of the toughest guys to ever lace up the skates, though he's probably best known for his fight with Bobby Hull where Hull got the better of him while wearing a face guard to protect a broken jaw.

Lesser known of Ferguson was his lacrosse skills. He was a big figure in the Western Lacrosse League, feared for his toughness and talent.

Canadian sports lost an icon. His son is the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Wow. That is young for a former athlete. Every good hockey team needed at least one John Furguson. I probably remember him most for getting Bobby Clark to break that Russian's ankle during the 1972 series between Russia and Canada.

In the old six team NHL every team had an enforcer. The Canadiens had Furguson, The leafs had Eddie Shack. I can't remember the others The enforcers kept the bad guys off the "stars".

Ferguson was one heck of an enforcer but was known for being a genuine nice guy away from the rink. Hadn't heard, though, that he was bested by Bobby Hull.

Will be missed ...
