I agree that that could be a more suitable word. But as you say it yourself, the most used defition for anti-Semitism is anti-Jews/anti-Judaism. And since when is anti-Jewish the same as anti-Israeli?

Anti-Jewish and anti-Israel are two different things, yes. You should use the words in different occasions.

Rick,

Andem is right when saying the word still holds but the meaning is twisted in some people's mind (for political reasons) I might add. When Zionists need some attention, they cry the word anti-semitic. It is used and abused by a very small group of people.

BTW. you and Andem are correct: anti-semitic is not anti-Jewish and anti-Israeli at the same time.

Well it is only natural when a word is used for awhile, a large number of people starts using it without really knowing its real meaning. This takes us back to the original discussion that the word anti-Semite is misused.

When we are just focusing on the word itself: yes, the word is misused, because as you all pointed out, a Semite is not only a Jew. If we focus on the history of the meaning of anti-Semitism: I have my doubts. When the word anti-Semitism was "invented", there were very few Semites other than Jews in Europe (where the word was used for the "first time") to whom the word could relate to.

At that time, Jews were mistreated in Europe. They were called Semite and the Jews called their abusers anti-Semite. Well this word is still being used in the same context but not only against Europeans but against anybody who dare to say something against Jews in general.
