The Canadian Cancer Society has chosen the daffodil as its symbol of hope in the fight against cancer; the Daffodil Month raises funds and promotes awareness in relation to the research into new and innovative ways to combat cancer. This morning, in the Rideau Hall greenhouses, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D., the Governor General of Canada, received bouquets of daffodils from two cancer patient children, symbolizing the beginning of Daffodil Month.

The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, P.C., M.P., the Member for Calgary Southwest and Prime Minister of Canada also received bouquets in his office to recognize the event; however, unlike Her Excellency, the Prime Minister ordered a team of security guards to keep his office safe from the media during the event.
But see, this is why we should consider ourselves lucky to have a Governor General alongside our Prime Minister; Prime Ministers are too often political persons, devoid of the emotion and tact that a head of state-like figure should have to unite the people. So often, we have seen beautiful speeches and messages from Her Excellency, free from the political turmoil of the other two components of Parliament Assembled.
