A man who mistreated three children, turning their home into a "prison camp", has been jailed for three years. Alan Liddle, 48, who earlier changed his plea to guilty was sentenced at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Friday.
The court heard how Liddle beat the youngest boy with his belt buckle, forced him into freezing cold baths and rubbed soiled pants into his face.
Liddle admitted wilfully mistreating the children between July 2002 and January 2004 at a home in Craigentinny.
Changed plea
Liddle changed his plea on the fourth day of a trial in which the court heard evidence of systematic abuse by the accused.
The children, who were six, seven and 14 at the time are now aged nine, 10 and 17.
After meeting Liddle the youngest began to suffer accidents and was severely punished for it.
Liddle repeatedly forced the boy to undress and bend over his bed or a chair. He then took off his belt and beat him with the buckle end leaving him with thick purple bruises.
On one occasion, the boy's 17-year-old sister, a nursing home care assistant, described seeing her brother fall to the ground screaming in agony.
"He kept saying 'I am sorry, I am sorry'" pleading with Liddle not to hurt him, but he paid no attention. Afterwards Liddle went into the living room and sat reading a magazine.

It felt as if we were living in a prison camp
A victim of Liddle
She said Liddle shouted and swore at her for minor matters like calling a sink a bunker and for the way she wrapped a flex around an iron.
"I felt like I couldn't do anything in the house, everything I did was wrong. It felt as if we were living in a prison camp.
The children's mother said Liddle was a "control freak" who would not even allow the children to chat during meals and who spent his time reading magazines and drinking whisky.
She said she had contemplated committing suicide because of his actions.
Defence agent, Grant Markie, told Sheriff Isabella McColl that Liddle had been suffering emotional and mental health difficulties at the time, but he accepted that his behaviour had been a significant breach of trust.
Sheriff McColl said because of the lateness of the guilty plea, the children had had to go through the ordeal of giving evidence.
The behaviour of the little boy, she said, had become so disturbed that he was sent by his school to psychiatric services at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children.

I just know I'm gonna be verbally flayed here for this, but what the heck! Any Mother that can stand by and see her own children brutally abused for several years, and then bleat that she sometimes wanted to commit suicide, when her children most desperately needed her to help them, beggars belief! I have no sympathy for her whatsoever! Where were her wits? Her maternal conscience? I know all the stories about women who become so demoralised that they are incapable of stopping their abuser, but these were her children. If the women haven't got the incentive to leave, fine, but why let the children pay for their mealy mouthed excuses! Sorry, I just simply hate this...

No flaying coming from me, since I thought the exact same thing. But, the article doesn't specifically say what ended the abuse after the year and a half. She may have gotten a grip on herself and had the courage to kick him to the curb. Sometimes, for weak people, these things aren't instantaneous, especially if a woman has grown up with abuse.

You may be right Karrie, maybe she did pull herself together and report it, though they still went through years of hell! I'm having a bad day, and I guess I let it get to me... I do so hate this kind of thing. Sorry for the rant!

I don't blame you. It gets to me too. I know, after my sister-in-law (husband's sister) found out that her husband had abused her child, she went straight to the police. I don't know if it works the same way everywhere, but here, she won't ever be able to work around children in a registered capacity, as say a day care worker or a licensed day home provider, because SHE ended up with a record of failing to protect a child. She didn't complain though, because like she said, too often women will allow it to carry on for ages. They need to be held responsible in at least some capacity for what their children suffer too.

I like the fact that she reported it straight away to the police, as soon as she realised what had happened, and deplore the fact that she is limited now in employment! She did the right thing and gets penalised for it? That's so unfair, I think she deserves a medal! I totally agree that those women that allow abuse of their children to continue one day over the fact, should be held accountable, along with the abusers.

One of the biggest things though is proof. For all anyone might know, she really did know for years prior to reporting it and simply pleaded ignorance once she decided to finally come forward.

Yes, we should all speak out against child abuse and not attempt to find ways to protect abusers. But unfortunately that is not always the case.

http://www.armchair.com/warp/abuse1.html

"In California a one-year moratorium on the statute of limitations for cases of sexual abuse was put in place much to the dismay of church lawyers who felt this action might very well bankrupt the church."

Bankrupt them or not, it is still more important that justice be done for the victims and to try to protect the abusers with a fight against extending the statute of limitations can be seen as nothing more than evil IMHO.
