Jack Schlossberg
Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of John F. Kennedy, waves as President Joe Biden departs from the White House in Washington, DC on Friday, Sept. 6, 2024.
Former president John F. Kennedy’s grandson Jack Schlossberg announced on Wednesday that he will run for Congress as a Democrat in 2026.
The 32-year-old said he would seek a seat representing New York’s 12th congressional district, held by Rep. Jerry Nadler. Nadler announced in September that would not be running for re-election.
Schlossberg framed his run as a response, in part, to the economic agenda pushed by Republicans and President Donald Trump. That includes Trump’s so-called “Big Beautiful Bill,” which Schlossberg said sparked a “cost of living crisis” with historic “cuts to social programs working families rely on. Health care, education, childcare.”
Said Schlossberg on Instagram as he announced his run: “We deserve better, and we can do better, and it starts with the Democratic Party winning back control of the House of Representatives.”
Schlossberg’s full name is John Bouvier Kennedy Schlossberg.
“With control of Congress, there’s nothing we can’t do. Without it, we’re helpless to a third term,” he added in his announcement.
Trump administration slams comments
The Trump administration was quick to slam JFK’s grandson for his “ridiculous comments” about the current administration.
Schlossberg is the only grandson of former president Kennedy, whose nephew, Robert F. Kennedy, serves as Trump’s secretary of health and human services.
Schlossberg trashed his elder relative as a “rabid dog” and called the Trump administration “the most corrupt in American history” as he rolled out his campaign.
“I don’t even think such ridiculous comments are worth responding to. Obviously, those things are not true,” Leavitt told New York Post at her regular briefing.
“Secretary Kennedy is doing a phenomenal job bringing transparency and the gold standard of science back to our health-care system,” she added.
Doesn’t hold back with criticism
Schlossberg didn’t hold back during an interview with MSNBC while making his bid official.
“(Trump) is so obsessed with the Kennedys, and the Kennedy name and the Kennedy brand, that he caged one and put it in his cabinet, a rabid dog in his cabinet,” Schlossberg said. “Put a collar on my cousin, RFK Jr., and has him there barking, spreading lies and spreading misinformation.”
Schlossberg added: “I don’t think it takes a genius to know that the Trump administration is the most corrupt in American history. And I don’t know who’s paying (RFK Jr.), but I know that what he’s saying isn’t making anybody healthier or safer, and that the American people should know, when he barks, who’s actually talking.”
If he wins next year’s election, Schlossberg would represent Midtown, the Upper East Side and the Upper West Side of New York City.
