I think that the writer of this article is the "Best-In-The-West". I sure wish I could write as colourful as this guy does. I collect all his articles.

The talk of the town is James Fallows' cover story [subscription required] in the December issue of the Atlantic monthly about (you guessed it) why Iraq has no army.

Luckily ... I found a copy of the article, so yuh don't need to be a subscriber to Atlantic Monthly in order to read it.

Good article.

Where the real development of Iraqi military will be the local neighborhood militia which scares the bejeeezus out of everybody ---from the terrorists to the US generals.

It is also why several clerics are asking the US to release to these groups to fight the terrorists or their ethnic enemies.

America is holding the real Iraqi militia back.

This article covers what we are doing to create a professional military and police and even allows some mention of the indivdual acts of bravery of these people, but it gives no mention to the neighborhood militias not controlled by American direction or training.

These militias are already making the northern area of the Kurds safe.

These militias are already making the southern area safer from the sunni insurgents.

But they also (while providing neighborhood security) will be the seeds of a major vandetta war.
