Singapore Renewable Energy Initiative

The Government of Singapore has implemented a plan to develop alternative energy. With the best environmental track record among Asian countries, Singapore wants to maintain its position as South-East Asia's environmental leader. It has already deployed a fleet of cars that run on hydrogen fuel, in order to promote hydrogen as an energy vector.

In this context, Air Liquide and its subsidiary, SOXAL, announce the inauguration of a hydrogen filling station, which the Group designed and developed at Singapore for BP, the international petroleum company. The station will provide hydrogen gas for vehicles that are equipped with a fuel cell and thus are 100% environmentally friendly. The filling station uses the latest technology for producing, storing and dispensing hydrogen. This recent success has been made possible thanks to Air Liquide's expertise in all stages of the hydrogen supply chain. Moreover, Air Liquide and BP have developed a global relationship and Air Liquide already supports BP projects in North America, Europe and Asia.

Based on Air Liquide technology, the site includes an electrolyser, which produces hydrogen without any CO2 emissions, and a high pressure hydrogen hose (350 bar) which fills the fuel tank very quickly, completely ensuring the safety of the driver and vehicle. A "fill-up" at these hydrogen filling stations can be done safely and easily in three minutes under conditions very similar to those of a standard petrol station.

Following the hydrogen stations in Madrid, Kawasaki, Luxemburg, a mobile station built for Michelin's Challenge Bibendum in Shanghai, and a model station in Sassenage (France), this is Air Liquide’s sixth hydrogen distribution filling station.

François Darchis, member of the Executive Committee of Air Liquide, said: “This new hydrogen station developed by Air Liquide confirms our solid experience in the field and our proficiency in controlling the hydrogen chain at all stages from production to consumer use. As the reduction of transportation-related polluting emissions becomes a priority, these clean technologies are becoming increasingly competitive and are proving their relevance as solutions for the future."

We could do this in Canada too. Wind power, tidal power, and solar power produce electricity intermittantly but electrical energy could be used to electrolyze water and produce hydrogen when electrical supply exceeds demand. Hydrogen is an energy storage medium.
