If the current Government of Canada is defeated on the Speech from the Throne (which would not go in the likely category, but rather in the off-chance category), what then? Should the Parliament be dissolved, even if it's less than six days after the first sitting of the House? Should the Leader of the Opposition be asked to attempt to form a government? What would happen? What should happen? I was watching Sunday Sound Off on CPAC, and it got me wondering.

Anyone keeping tabs on how many consecutive defeats the NDP and BLOQ have? Am I the only one tired of their loser agendas getting in the way of progress?

I don't think the Conservatives will be defeated any time soon but if it does happen, the party that is seen to cause yet another election so soon, will suffer at the ballot box. IMHO

It depends on exactly what peice of legislation the government is defeated on. If it is the Throne speech or any money bill the Government has to resign. If however, the government is defeated on its a procedural motion or mandatory minimum sentences then I think the government should at least try to stay in office.

If the Government is defeated on lets say the Throne Speech the GG should then call upon the Opposition to try and form a government. I think this could be possible, especially if a formal coalition evolves with the NDP. Since it is at least somewhat likely that a centre-left government could get support from the socialist-sparatist BQ fo a budget I think this would be the only logical course of action.

If this did happen I wonder what would happen to the Liberal leadership race.

RE: In the Event of Defea

All politicians should be shot for being politicians.

Just to remind the next lot who come through, to work for the people and not their hip pockets.

edit: Not that we need Communism, but we need responsible 'public' servants who take it on as a serious role, unlike most in the current state of politics.

In the event that should happen, I would nominate FiveParadox. With a little bit of pep talk (AKA brainwashing), he would be right on track.

I wouldn't wish and I doubt the puplic either wishes another election so soon. I really think Jean should ask for the parties to form a new government. I think if the conservatives have the balls to form a government whicht he people want, as in the CPC only recieved 36% of the vote they would form a national unity coalition with either the Liberals or the Liberals and the NDP and govern moderately. Of course the NDP and Liberals could also form a government with hopes that the BLoq would vote there way. I'm not big with either of the three main parties working with the bloq. Though I do not mind the bloqs centre left leanings I can not stand there views on Canada and though I think they have the right to run and sit in parliment I still do not agree with there views.

BTW the bloq will most likely save the conservatives.

If this government fall the there will be another minority only the Liberals will be back on top. The Tories will lose just enough seats to be thrown out. The child care legislation and the battle with the press and media is enough to do him in.
The media will be pushing the hidden agenda routine even more the Liberals next time round. And I also believe the NDP will gain in pockets especially in the west.

RE: In the Event of Defea

If the Conservatives screw things up enough, the Liberals might just slide in with a majority government.
