We have a beautiful country that embraces an excellent system of democracy, socialism and free market at the same time.

All of the above, and smoked meat (viande fumee-- that is one thing separatistes and federalistes agree on. You score extra points if you like poutine) .

I especially miss Montreal on days like this.

And beets. The boy wants beets.

There used to be a place in Vancouver that served the most amazing Montreal smoked chicken. Oh, I can still recall how good it tasted. However, my life as a vegetarian-who-cheats-by-eating-samon precludes enjoying such pastimes.

Everywhere I went today, the people were so happy. Not beligerently patriotic, just happy, almost joyous. It was nice.

MMM...if yo uever make it to Montreal, Chalet BBQ on Sherbrooke and Decarie Blvd (I WON"T TELL, VEG HEAD!).

Nirvana, period.

I do wish I were there today-- something subtle about Canada Day.

Hell, I even like Fete Nationale in Quebec-- though admittedly, it may have something to do with why people go to car races. Theres always the drama that things may get out of hand.

Yes haggis, there is something wrong with me, I know.

You know, I'll bet Michael Moore could have a field day with us.

"The Boys Who Wore Out Their Keyboards and the Mother Who Bore Them".

I don't know who'd need more therapy afterward-- us or him.

What comes to my mind is a picture I saw of Pierre Trudeau once. He was paddling down one of our great rivers in that buckskin jacket with the fringes. I remember thinking how canadian it was.

I love the landscape of this country, its vastness and untouched beauty. British Columbia still has places where no humans go. Although if we don't get rid of Gordon Campbell we will probally see drilling rigs in our beautiful ocean. :(

I enjoy the Irian grocery down the road, learning their customs and views on life. I enjoy showing my friend from kosvo the ins and outs of living in canada. So the muticulturism of Canada and our tolerance and acceptance of others sets us apart from alot of other countries. These people with their horror stories and their appreciation of everything we take for granted reminds me how great it is to be a Canadian.

What a delightful coincidence, that picture of Trudeau also spells Canada for me, very much so.

What you have written is lovely. I am really enjoying these comments in this thread.

Nice! Chalet BBQ is great, a whole chicken dinner (serves 4) for 17,79$! Excellent value, and I miss that restaurant! MMMMMM.

Nanaimo bar, for one thing. And has anybody ever heard of Canadian cheeses? They are not cheese, but rather a bakery delicacy, and I know of only one bakery in Vancouver that still knows how to make them. They're made of two little circles of baked meringue with butter rum cream cheese filling.

Oh yum!! I might have to take a little stroll into Vancouver...

Only place left that knows about these things: Broadmoor Bakery in Richmond at Number Three Road and Williams. We're going to get five dozen for a certain upcoming wedding.
