Hypochondriac or cautious?

Especially for you guys who are into news and have read a lot of things in the politics in North America especially.
My flatmate has been following political news including the ones about US politics.
He came to the conclusion, actually he said that it was stated in the news he has followed that there have been signs that US economy is going to collapse, which then of couse would make the world's economy to be in chaos eventually.
So with this expectation, he is now trying to make himself independent.
Say if anything bad happens in big cities such as Dublin as the capital city, he can just go to the mountains to live.
So he is starting buying things such as water filter, solar power generator, etc.
I am living with this guy, thank goodness with another flatmate, but am a little bit wary now, is he being paranoid or being realistically cautious to prepare what might happen in the future?

Actually he said about Marshall law might be applied in the US in the near future as the result, and wars might break out in some countries.
Even if this is true that these things will happen, I suppose cause I'm still single, the way I see it if I were going to die and I can't do anything about it, maybe I shouldn't use the time left to just worry sick. Or maybe I don't have paranoia streak at all!
How we die is what I would be worried about though, whether it's going to be a long suffering or painful...

Wow, that is one serious dose of paranoia. Unhealthy paranoia.

I was thinking that seems to be the case.
Should I move out then? He's the only man in the house too.

He kept talking about there is a conspiracy of very evil men who say have people killed just because they're pure evil.
I would reckon people do things driven by a better motivation than just being evil, maybe an evil motivation like to get richer or more powerful at the expense of others. Tried to contest what he was saying but well his belief is as solid as a rock it seems.

I don't know him at all but I think he's overstating the concern. Even if a recession appeared, we've lived through many. As for the evil, not sure where he gets his news from.

You could milk this for all it's worth, here's some tips.
He brings in some favourite food stuffs and you "accidently" cough all over it ...then tell him you might have some kinda wierd lung spores according to your doc...voila free food.
go along with the whole idea the world is going to collapse like next week and get him to buy tons of meat for the they say there is gonna be a meat shortage , do this with all sorts of foods daily and when nothing happens you get to help him eat it all before it spoils....

Be inventive anything he likes tell him there is gonna be a shortage and stock up....this guy is a gold mine....

how big are you...if yer big..tell him he start to investing some dosh in you if you want to stick around for when anarchy strikes there is strenght in numbers....

Swit:

He's paranoid; if he's no threat to you, then don't worry about it. If he's a little off beam, move out.

Pretty simple.

Pangloss

Postscript: I've never met a paranoid who had an overactive concern for others; it was always for themselves, and it justified all sorts of really awful behaviour. I'd just bugger off.

And it isn't like they get over it overnight. Check on him 20 years from now. What you see now x 2, with nurses asking him to take his medication as prescribed.

We could hear he's listening to this American political radio station EVERYday!
Don't know what station though, he just said it's based in Texas and the broadcaster or the owner has been attempted to be killed couple of times *sigh*
I didn't and still don't have that much interest so I never asked what station it is, but maybe I'll ask one of these days.
Apparently he's also browsing the links I put in the thread here.
You guys are more than welcome to put your links too in that thread :)
Oh btw, I didn't mean putting those links to make you hypochondriac though! Just some interesting read maybe.

You're right Pangloss.
Actually when he got the water filter, I jokingly then asked whether the filter is only for himself or for the house. He looked surprised and with this as if remembering some painful memory, he told me it was very expensive  Which actually didn't really answer my question that bluntly but sort of answered it too, hahahaha, well I guess if such moment he predicted comes, we'll know how egoistic selfish people can be.

I tried to challenge him once asking, well it's more important to me anyway to do something with the knowledge you have rather than just say,"Oh I know this and this and this."
So I asked if he would try to "save" people he cares about like his family such as parents, siblings.
This bloke is still single too. And his reply was he tried to warn them to be prepared but they thought he's just being a looney, da!
Sad in a way, and he is actually a smart man I reckon.
Only I wonder if I should leave this bloke alone rather than provoking him to grow a dislike to me since I already told him several times to ask him to clean up his own mess in the house.
A looney and lazy flatmate, just what I need...

DD, well you surely know how to take advantage, I'll say
I could, but I won't.
Actually what you're suggesting won't work either.
I can still get my own food anyway and he isn't that stupid to fool and I don't reckon my conscious lets me to use a potentially sick person.

He's expecting anarchy strikes in about couple of years from now, and when such time comes, he'll live in the woods and get food from there. I'm imagining Rambo now  Ooh, that mental image hurts for this time in the morning especially!
So if anything, he wants to grow things in the backyard.
I just take his ideas on getting water filter and growing veggies let's say in the backyard from the practical point of view which is actually not a bad idea. Might get the filter for my family in fact just for healthy reason and learn how to garden, not a useless skill.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to put aside anything you might need to use if an emergency pops up..doesn't have to be "the end of civ as we know it", just enough stuff to get you thru a couple of bad weeks. It could be some natural disaster or a major power failure and you would be all set.

first off I was just kidding, and knew you would not take it serious...
but seriously, if you think this person has real issues you must realize if you do become the enemy in their eyes and they are really mad and live with you, in their eyes and mind they could justify poisoning you. slowly or quickly...they have total acces to your life when you are around and not.

something to think about. hmmmmmmmm

Tell him not to believe everything he reads or hears, especially from radical media. I'm sure they are the same people who claimed the world was coming to an end in 1972, 1977, 1980, 1984, 1989, 1993, 1996, 2000, 2002, and 2005.
