Our Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin sustains heavy criticism on his appointment of Jean Michalle as Governor General.
The critics consist mainly of conservatives, (duh), however many centrists and some leftists quebecois have jumped onto the bandwagon as well, in calling the move an attempt at warming to Quebec voters, suggesting that the federal liberals are more concerned about getting re-elected this year than they are over the threat of Quebec sovereignty.
The obvious appeal to Quebec voters? Up until recently Jean held dual citizenship with france through her marriage to filmmaker Jean-Daniel Lafond, who also happens to be friends with FLQ (quebec sovereigntist terrorist group) member Jacques Rose.
(sexy name, huh?)
I for one whince at the prospect of how Quebec would feel about the liberals if Jean held, instead, an american citizenship. I admit doubt in Paul Martin's selection if that were the scenario, and how bizarre it may seem for someone of her background to represent the english Queen Betty (II).
I am not here to defend Paul Martin.
I am here to defend Her Excellency, Governor General Jean Michalle, and her competance in the canadian political sphere, and her role as a magnificent Canadian.
Jean was born in Haiti (DO NOT FEAR! THIS ISN'T A BIO!) (OKAY SORTOF, BUT READ ON!) and left the country with her family to escape the regime of dictator François Duvalier. They sought refuge in Canada. That's how she got here.
She was a university teacher! Not bad at all if I do say so myself. She's already got more qualifications than the president of the united states! fistbite fistbite. :whee:
Eh? EH?
A creature of moral righteousness. Humanitarian! SHE HAS THE CAREZ.

If you've viewed any of which, you'd certainly lack objection. I love(WITH BURNING DESIRE) all of these programs and hold them in incredibly high regard as some of the incredible few credible informative programs in Canada, never mind North America!
I had no idea. When I watched the ceremony all I thought was "Huhn...I've seen her before. I don't know where though. Hmm. I want doritos.".
Now that I've actually taken a look into it, I have fallen in complete love with our governor general.
To simply undermine her wonderfullness by saying that Paul's using her is terrible.
What fucking difference does it bear on her abilities whether it aids the liberal agenda?
A banner to all whiney conservatives (mainly those in alberta)!
Shyaddup.
I don't care if her father was a nazi, her sister's a mass murderer or whatever you conservs wanna blackwash her with. She's a damn fine woman.
Having a yet-to-be terrorist make your husband a desk shouldn't damn a person of this immense acheivement. NOT IN CANADA IT WON'T!
(paul's still a suckling pig. It may very well be all icing on the cake of kebec to him)

She received a Bachelor of Arts in Italian and Hispanic languages and literature, and continued her studies towards a Master of Arts in comparative literature at the University of Montreal. From 1984 to 1986, she taught at the Faculty of Italian Studies at the same university.

During the 1980's, she pursued linguistic and literary studies at the University of Perouse, the University of Florence and the Catholic University of Milan, all of which cited her for excellence
Eh? EH?
As she pursued her studies, Michaëlle Jean worked for eight years, from 1979 to 1987, with Québec shelters for battered women. She has taken in, supported and accompanied hundreds of women and children in crisis, while actively contributing to the establishment of a network of emergency shelters throughout Québec and elsewhere in Canada. She was also involved in aid organizations for immigrant women and families, and later worked at Employment and Immigration Canada and at the Conseil des Communautés culturelles du Québec.

Madame Jean's sense of social commitment and her appreciation of national and international realities led her to journalism. In 1995, she anchored a number of Réseau de l'Information Radio-Canada (RDI) programs such as Le Monde ce soir, l'Édition québécoise, Horizons francophones, Les Grands reportages, Le Journal RDI, and RDI l'écoute.
