Following Sears selling off their credit card division, the HBC is planning on doing the same. I believe the Sears cards are now owned by a NY Co.[J.Morgan Chase] & our credit details are in American hands. Expext to see similar results with our Bay & Zellers cards :(

A simple yet effective rule of thumb.....if you don't have the cash, than don't buy it! only an idiot would pay those kind of interest rates. Blah!

Part of the reason they want to drop the cards is that people aren't carrying as much debt on them as before,so they aren't making the kind of profits they used to. I use mine, but pay them off each month and pay no interest.

Speaking of credit cards, does anyone in Canada write "Check ID" on the back of their cards instead of singing it? I do it all the time, and use my US Driver's License as ID.

I was up in Canada over Christmas a few years back and while doing some shopping, a sales lady wouldn't accept my card since I hadn't signed it. I wound up seeing her supervisor and after some discussion, the sales lady backed down and allowed my purchase.

Seems this lady was hiding in the closet or something all these years. Not signing the card and replacing the signature with "Check ID" helps prevent anyone who gets their hands on it from using the card.

It happened to HBC as well, they're now handled by GE Money (yes, GE as in General Electric, the same people who probably made at least one of your appliances)

I think they used to be handled by HSBC. The Source by Circuit City is still HSBC, not sure where else.

I did the same with my RBC Starbucks Duetto Card.

It was also 19.5%, and the interest was piling up.

I, however, had absolutely no difficulty changing my card to the Classic with Low Rate option, which is 11.5%.

All I had to do was call the credit department and ask, and thats it.

I got a very polite person who told me it was possible, because my account was in excellent standing (R1) with absolutely no late payments. It did, however, put a hit on my TransUnion file (but who cares anyway, most banks turn to Equifax), but it sure was worth it and the mere $20.00 annual fee

To this day, I've saved a LOT of money.

My personal banker at CIBC told me that RBC really focuses on their credit cards, but for anything else its almost impossible to get. I have an account at RBC, which I don't even use, and my application for overdraft protection was declined, however I was able to raise my VISA limit from $3500 to $6000. When this increase happened, I paid off my Source card with my visa.

I just got approved for a sears card today, and I plan to buy a $720 train ticket on it, and then pay it off immediately, thus getting all those sears points and paying no interest.

No, we don't write that on our cards.

Some places won't accept cards if they're not signed (depends on who you get) and/or will ask for ID.

Demand an investigation...

Most cards can't even be used unless they're activated (which requires you phone from home), though I'm not sure what the terms are in India.

Pay off all your credit cards but keep one (for emergencies). I looked at my Mastercard bill one time and noticed they'd been charging me a high interest rate (either 18% or 20 something, can't quite remember). I paid it off immediately. Then I called them up and said I wanted a better rate or I'd go to Visa. The lady on the phone said she could give me 11% and some sort of annual fee. I told her that wasn't good enough; I'm not interested in paying an annual fee and I still want a better interest rate (I was looking for a single digit interest rate). She told me to hold on. After a few minutes she put her supervisor on who offered me 9% with no annual fees. I took it.

I have two AMEX, a Visa, and two MCs, along with my work expense Visa card.

I have never carried a balance yet.

I use the Amex for travel; the visa never, one MC is used for general stuff, the other I only use for online purchases.
