On the occasion of the recent election in Israel, the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, P.C., M.P., the Member of Parliament for Calgary Southwest and the Prime Minister of Canada, released a statement indicating Canada's continued support of peace in the region, highlighting a strong relationship with Israel, in particular. He indicated a strong wish to continue to work with His Excellency Mahmoud Abbas, the President of the Palestinian Authority and his neighbouring Government of Israel to that end.
The Prime Minister today phoned His Excellency Ehud Olmert, the Prime Minister-Designate of Israel and the Leader of the Kadima Party of Israel, to congratulate him on his strong showing in the election. He, and Mr. Olmert, agreed that Canada and Israel should work together to ensure that the relationship between the two continues to strengthen. Mr. Olmert's party commands twenty-eight seats, of the one hundred twenty-seat Knesset of Israel.
