According to "the Rick Mercer Report", the GST cut that Harper is proposing won't come into effect until 2011. Where else can I get honest news from?

That will be AFTER the NEXT 2 Elections, so if Harper gets in now, he will have to win a second election before this cut takes place, because if another one wins the 2nd election in 2009 or 2010,, they can erase the GST cut legistlation with their own legistlation.

So, if anyone was going to vote CCP Harper on the basis of that 2% GST reduction... Its an empty promise.

Mind you, my poor math skills calculate that the 2% GST cut will only let you keep about $200 of $10,000 worth of "GST associated items" - is it worht your vote? I am poor and $200 spread over a year doesn't help me enough to bother with it.

i personally don't find being taxed at both ends fair. I especially don't like GST tax-cut talks from Harpie because they remind me of those loyalty programs where you have to spend to save.

Lets see, Harpie promises something way down the road which leaves issues like winning another election, changes in fiscal status, memory of the electorate, etc to all come into play. In other words, Harpie is all show and no substance (well, at least as far as his election promises. He may have substance we don't really want to see if he ever gets any power)

The first 1%...about $100 a year for those who need it most...would come in right away. The second 1% would be in 2011 (so he can re-announce it). I've seen a couple of analysts say that the second 1% could be put off until 2015 though, depending on circumstances, and Harper would still be keeping his promise.

So Harper's tax cut really amounts to knocking 1% off of the GST. ONE PERCENT. That's not a tax cut, over the course of a year it's the kind of tip you give a not-particularly attentive bartender.

RE: Harper's GST at 5% -

The GST should not be reduced at all. What is going to make up for lost revenue?

What he should do is continue putting 5.5% of GST towards general revenue and the remaining 1.5% towards Health Care.
