Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced Friday the government will install two new military facilities in the Arctic to boost Canada's sovereign claim over the Northwest Passage and signal its long-term commitment to the North.
He said the Canadian Forces will build a new army training centre in Resolute Bay and refurbish an existing deepwater port at a former mining site in Nanisivik.
Ottawa says it will cost an estimated $100 million to refurbish the port site. Construction is slated to begin in 2010, with an end date of 2015.

Canadian borders are notoriously porous and foreign nationals wishing to avoid deportation usually do. It's no secret. It's been our shame for years. The Canadian government is clueless about border security and the meaning and responsibilities of sovereignty. Why would northern bases deter foreign mischief?

Compared to a sponge. And like a sponge we suck in anything in our immediate surrounding. Canada must do a better job of securing its borders and deporting those who come here to benefit from federal ineptness.

Talking about ineptness, have any of the 76 World Aids Conference instant-refugees-cum-attendees from the Toronto conference last year been sent packing? They had clearly been told offshore we were a soft touch and came to the conference under false pretenses. Harper had wisely refused to be there. Has the Canadian government done its job with this particular crew?
