A re-enactment of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ over Easter weekend ended with the death of a Nigerian student who was taking part, according to the Daily Mail.
Sule Ambrose, 25, a seminary student who had been studying for the priesthood, was taking part in the Good Friday re-enactment of Christ’s suffering and death.
At some point during the proceedings, he slipped on the ground and collapsed, but onlookers assumed it was all part of the drama.
Ambrose was training to be a priest at the Claretian University Seminary in Nekede, a town in southeastern Nigeria. He was playing the role of Simon Peter in the holy day event and wore a long white robe for his part in the re-enactment.
Simon Peter was Jesus’ most important disciple — the leader of the 12 Apostles.
When Ambrose could not get up at the end of the performance, people in the audience finally realized there was a serious medical issue.
He was rushed to a school hospital, but his condition worsened. He was taken to a nearby medical centre, where he died.
The cause of the young man’s death remains unknown. Administrators at the university suspended all Easter activities as a result of the incident.
