I love my country. I love the way we embrace people in need all over the world with our wealth. We are good people at heart. We open ourselves up to tolerance. I like the way we celebrate our day quietly. It's not overly boisterous and yet it does make a point.

Seven years ago today we moved into our apartment--well, we moved Ski's stuff, mine was to follow in a week. It was moving hell. Uhaul had shipped everything to Montreal and we moved in a cargo van...finally...

Everywhere else you can move when you want to.

I'm from montreal and i do remember that july 1st was a big moving day ....but isn't that the same everywhere...whats with this comment?

Here you have roughly 1/12th the people who will move in a year moving on any given 1st of the month. Our leases are not tied to a specific date like July 1st. Well, it just so happened that we had to move on July 1st in 2000 and despite a confirmed reservation from U-Haul, they had no vehicle since they were all in Montreal. We eventually (1 day late) got a small van to move our stuff. I was really thankfull for understanding and accomodating landlords at the old apartment which made the nightmare survivable. They let us put the stuff overnight in the sauna area so it could be moved the next day.

Of course, this would not have been such a big deal if the tennant at our new place not decided that she was staying in this appartment until 11:59PM June 30th. She also stayed an extra month as well meaning painters had to come AFTER we had moved in.

It was a case of everything that could go wrong did go wrong. My lessons learned are to make sure you have a signed lease before terminating the old residence and never move on July 1st.

I'd Rather

I never move at the end/beginning of a month. I leave a week early (just moved on the 20th of June)...even keep the old place so I have a week to go back and clean up and make sure nothing was
overlooked. It's worth the extra week of rent just to have happy movers who aren't rushing
you into a place...who take the time to hook up things and set up beds, and plug in fridges, etc...

I hadn't rented in years but sold my last home two years ago and am now into my second rental.... it has drawbacks too but I love the freedom from responsibility of owning a home and my money is cooking away at the stockbroker for me.

Still - it isn't my place... some days it's bummer because I love decorating....

The plan was 2 weeks. We would move in June 15th and then leave the old place on the 30th having done all the actuall move since then. However, the tennant in our new place asked and got for an extra month (our security check hadn't passed yet or somthing). So they suggested July 15th which was impossible since my old place had already been rented as of 07/01. Then the tennant stayed until the last possible minute probably just to spite the current management but she wound up spiting me.

Sorry members - I went off topic and just want to answer Rather's message.....

That's a terrible situation for you - you got screwed and the landlord should have paid for an extra week at your previous place.... I get the move in date in writing or I don't pay! It's the landlord's responsibility. In my case the place was vacant two weeks before I took posession...but I think it depends on the neighborhood too - sometimes properties are at a premium - in my case the place was slow in renting so I had my way a bit on when I would move in.

Happy Day Talloola

I have some family in Courtenay - but I don't have permission to chat about them on a forum...but wanted to share with you they absolutely love it there and have the best time..... it sounds like a great community of people ... always something going on...

I've always thought they were going on about the place because they lived there...but you also feel the same way..... it must be as they tell me.
