OTTAWA - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rebuked his Canadian counterpart on social media late Tuesday, after Justin Trudeau urged Israel to protect civilian life in the brutal war it is waging on Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli military said it was carrying out a raid on Wednesday against Hamas militants in Al Shifa Hospital, having urged them to surrender with thousands of Palestinian civilians still sheltering inside Gaza Strip's biggest hospital.
Less than an hour earlier, around 1 a.m. local time (2300 GMT), a Gaza health ministry spokesman said Israel had told officials in the enclave that it would raid the Shifa hospital complex "in the coming minutes."
Israel has said that Hamas has a command centre underneath Al Shifa and uses the hospital and tunnels beneath it to conceal military operations and to hold hostages. Hamas denies it.
In a statement, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said: "Based on intelligence information and an operational necessity, IDF forces are carrying out a precise and targeted operation against Hamas in a specified area in the Shifa hospital."
This will be horrible PR regardless of the outcome, & no nation would willingly raid a hospital unless it was damn confident it was justified in doing so.
Israeli army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner told CNN the hospital and compound were for Hamas "a central hub of their operations, perhaps even the beating heart and maybe even a centre of gravity."
The U.S. said on Tuesday that its own intelligence supported Israel's conclusions.

Add a GTA school principal to the list of professionals who have found themselves in the hot seat for anti-Israel social media postings.
We have seen this happen to an airline pilot, a police officer, restaurant servers and a journalist.
And now it’s the principal of Tribune Drive Public School in Brampton.
All of this has happened as a result of insensitive social media postings that have come in the weeks since the Oct. 7 black Sabbath slaughter that left 1,400 Israelis dead and another 240 held hostage.
“Your headline written for accuracy,” Rich Ward posted on X during the weekend. “Anti-Zionism has skyrocketed in the wake of the Israel-led genocide in Palestine.”
He was called out on this right away, and his account disappeared. Ward was not at work Monday.
“I can confirm that this matter is currently under investigation, and in the meantime, this individual will not be at the school,” said Malon Edwards, communications manager for the Peel District School Board. “Administrative personnel matters fall within the confidential purview of our human resources department. As such, Peel District School Board cannot comment further publicly on this confidential human resource matter.”
But are Jewish students at the school safe?
“At PDSB, we are deeply committed to nurturing safe and inclusive spaces where the humanity of all students, staff and communities are centred,” said Edwards. “We are focused on serving students and staff with compassion and care, while upholding their dignity and human rights. As always, the safety and well-being of all students and staff is of paramount importance to us.”
The board also cited an Oct. 17 letter from Director of Education Rashmi Swarup, “reiterating our commitment to address anti-Semitism and Islamophobia at this time.”
One of the big problems has been the approach of naming both anti-Semitism and Islamophobia at the same time. They are not the same thing and should not be used as a blotter to keep score.
Any intolerance is repugnant. But in recent weeks, it has been the rise of anti-Semitism that has been front and centre.
As Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw has stated, his Hate Crimes Unit has gone from four officers to 20 in response.
Charges under hate crime legislation have been laid and more are expected as police warn offenders may not be arrested at a scene but afterwards — thanks to video surveillance. When you look at the severe anti-Semitic violence in Montreal, you can see how important it is to take things seriously.
Toronto Police are currently investigating potential hate crimes of a person being held by Ottawa Police. It’s not an easy time for police, who are caught in the middle of a lot of this and are damned if they do and damned if they don’t.
But as B’nai Brith’s Michael Mostyn and Friends of Simon Wiesanthal Centre’s Michael Levitt have made clear, all anti-Semitism should be called out and not glossed over.
There is a major distinction between the criminal element that shoots up a synagogue or school in Montreal or vandalizes and intimidates Jewish businesses in Toronto and someone who shares their opinion on social media.
The self-inflicted cases on social media are troubling because they can take somebody who is law-abiding and in good standing in their community, and see their world turned upside down in an instant because of a posting that was clumsy and done in the heat of the moment.
Do you want every person cancelled permanently, or does it depend on the severity of the matter? My feeling is it should depend on a few things.
It can’t always be a one-size, fits-all solution or punishment. If the person is truly anti-Semitic or racist, there’s no other option than to move on from them.
If a person is regretful and made an error in judgment, perhaps there can be redemption.
Change or contrition leading to a path to forgiveness can’t be thrown out the window in war or peacetime.
That said, many of the people making these posts know exactly what they are doing? However, sometimes second chances and forgiveness needs to be part of life – even for major mess-ups.
Unless, of course, it’s so hateful there is no turning back.
In many cases — perhaps with education or an apology — a dumb mistake should not always mean the end of someone’s livelihood or status. This is especially true on social media, where anybody and everybody is going to blow it sometime.
Meawnhile, what do you do about a school principal who — besides one controversial tweet — has had a solid career of service to education?
Education minister Stephen Lecce said there is no room in Ontario for activist teachers.
“Parents rightfully expect that their child’s educator does not impose their personal ideological beliefs or political agendas on their students in the classroom,” he said. “I firmly agree, which is why our government passed legislation to ensure school boards deliver what the overwhelming of parents want, which is a focus on academic achievement, including strengthening reading, writing and math skills.”
Time will tell what Peel District School Board decides?

Vivian Silver, 74, of Winnipeg, is believed to have been kidnapped by Hamas on Oct. 7, according to a report.
OTTAWA — A Canadian peace activist believed to have been taken hostage during the Hamas attack in Israel five weeks ago is dead, her son says.
Vivian Silver’s son Chen Zeigen says Israeli authorities told him the remains of the 74-year-old woman had earlier been found in the kibbutz where she lived but were only identified now.
Zeigen told reporters in Ottawa last month that his mother was born in Winnipeg and moved to Israel in 1974.
He said she dedicated her life to peacebuilding and fostering understanding between Israelis and Palestinians.
Silver also volunteered to help children in Gaza access medical care in Israel.
Global Affairs Canada says officials are in contact with Silver’s Canadian family members and are providing assistance.
“It is with deep sadness that the Government of Canada has learned that Canadian-Israeli citizen Vivian Silver is deceased,” Global Affairs said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this difficult time.”
The department previously confirmed six Canadian citizens died in the Oct. 7 attack, as well as a seventh person with deep ties to Canada, who was not a citizen.
“Indeed we can confirm her body was identified,” a spokeswoman for the Israeli Embassy in Ottawa wrote late Monday.
Israel’s consul general in Toronto, Idit Shamir, said on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, that Silver has been confirmed dead.
Women Wage Peace, an organization Silver worked with, also posted about her death on X.
Silver’s home on Kibbutz Be’eri near the Gaza border was raided by Hamas militants as part of the attack, which Israel’s Foreign Ministry said killed roughly 1,200 people.
Silver’s son Yonatan Zeigen told reporters last month he had received information that she was taken hostage in Gaza and her phone was geolocated in Gaza.
He recounted last month during a Zoom news conference organized by the Jerusalem Press Club a phone call with his mother the day of the attack.

He said the two shifted their conversations to text messages to allow her to stay silent, and someone broke into her home. They said they loved one another before the messages stopped coming.
Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly called Silver a “proud Israeli Canadian and lifelong advocate for peace.”
“I met her son in Tel Aviv, and he described her as kind, generous, and selfless,” Joly wrote on X. “Canada mourns her loss with him and her loved ones.”
Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew also posted on X to express condolences.
“I’m saddened to learn of the murder of Vivian Silver by Hamas,” Kinew wrote. “My thoughts are with her family and our community here in Manitoba and in Israel. Her memory and her pursuit of peace is a bright light we will carry in our hearts during these dark times.”

They are shocked and disappointed at some of what they have seen when it comes to the open support on display for Hamas — not the Palestinian people in Gaza, but the terrorist group which attacked their homes, killed their friends and family members and kidnapped community members.
On Sunday, Harel and Ilan went to both the rally against anti-Semitism at Christie Pits and to the rally organized by Toronto 4 Palestine at Nathan Phillips Square.
“I’m disappointed,” Cohen said.
Sitting in Cafe Landwer, on Univeristy Ave., on Monday morning, the two men flipped back and forth between details of the attacks of just over a month ago and what they have seen in Toronto. They are shocked at the calls for what they view as a one-way ceasefire, and, given what they witnessed on Oct. 7, they aren’t in much of a mood for a ceasefire anytime soon.
Cohen said he feels very betrayed by the Palestinian workers who had been welcomed into the kibbutz as guest workers but who later gave up detailed information which was used in the attacks.
“They were like our house members, and they took advantage of that and gave information to Hamas,” Cohen said.
The level of detail was so intricate that Hamas knew the home of each squad leader for the kibbutz response team and that those homes should be visited first to kill the leadership.
“They had a very defined plan, they had maps, they had goals,” Oren said of the terrorist attacks.
Ilan, showing a surveillance video of a convoy of trucks entering his community through one of the entrances, is still in shock more than a month later. He noted the number of trucks, the number of fighters in each vehicle and the number of weapons they were carrying.
Thanks to Oren, Ilan and other members of the community, who were able to fight back and hold off the Hamas terrorists, the bloodshed was not as bad as it could have been. Still, five community members were killed, and six were taken hostage – a Jewish woman and five agricultural workers from Thailand.
On top of that, police officers and soldiers, who arrived to respond to the attacks, were killed along with several concertgoers from the Nova Music festival who sought refuge in the kibbutz. In total, about 30 people lost their lives at the hands of the Hamas terrorists that day.
A quarter of the homes in their community of just over 400 have been destroyed, lives have been lost and displaced, any sense of security shattered.
“Hamas is much worse than the Nazis or ISIS and they have to be out of the equation,” Cohen said.
Beyond an understandable bitterness towards the terrorist group that attacked his home, he described how Hamas mistreats the people of Gaza. The hard living conditions that have only gotten worse since Hamas came to power, and the embezzlement of foreign-aid money fed the war effort rather than the people.
“This is the difference between normal governments and Hamas,” Cohen said.
Both men stress again and again that people in places like Canada, the United States, or Europe simply don’t understand the brutality of Hamas’ regime.
That brutality was on display on Oct. 7; it landed right in their community.
Harel and Ilan witnessed it firsthand; they don’t want you to witness it, but they do want Canadians to be aware.

On top of that, police officers and soldiers, who arrived to respond to the attacks, were killed along with several concertgoers from the Nova Music festival who sought refuge in the kibbutz. In total, about 30 people lost their lives at the hands of the Hamas terrorists that day.
A quarter of the homes in their community of just over 400 have been destroyed, lives have been lost and displaced, any sense of security shattered.
“Hamas is much worse than the Nazis or ISIS and they have to be out of the equation,” Cohen said.
Beyond an understandable bitterness towards the terrorist group that attacked his home, he described how Hamas mistreats the people of Gaza. The hard living conditions that have only gotten worse since Hamas came to power, and the embezzlement of foreign-aid money fed the war effort rather than the people.
“This is the difference between normal governments and Hamas,” Cohen said.
Both men stress again and again that people in places like Canada, the United States, or Europe simply don’t understand the brutality of Hamas’ regime.
That brutality was on display on Oct. 7; it landed right in their community.
