Gun salutes from British soldiers rang out in London and other cities around Britain earlier today to mark the King's 75th birthday.

King Charles III was born in Buckingam Palace at 21:14 GMT on 14th November 1948 during the reign of his grandfather King George VI.

As part of his 75th birthday celebrations, the King met NHS nurses and midwives in the year that the NHS also celebrated its 75th birthday. Britain's cherished free health service was born in a country suffering from World War II.

With a workforce of 1.6 million the NHS is today the world's fifth-largest employer after Walmart, the Chinese Railways, the Chinese Ministry of Public Security and McDonald's - which is even more impressive in a country that is a lot smaller than China and the USA - and is the world's largest non-military public organisation.
