Violent game is 'Brit icon'

Game ... shoot 'em up

By LUCY HAGAN

ULTRA-violent video game series Grand Theft Auto has been named one of the top ten best British designs.

The notorious game — which features gun-toting gangsters and brutal car-jackings — ranked alongside red telephone boxes and Concorde.

The game has been subject to controversy since it was launched nine years ago.

US boffins used it in a study released earlier this year which found video games alter your brain to make you aggressive.

Earlier this month a court heard how a 13-year-old Suffolk lad had played Grand Theft Auto San Andreas before shooting his cousin in the face with his father’s shotgun. His relative, also 13, was seriously injured.

Mini ... in the top ten

The top ten was chosen by the public in a poll organised by BBC2’s Culture Show in conjunction with the Design Museum.

People were asked to vote for the best example of British design since 1900.

Those which just failed to make the shortlist include the E-Type Jaguar, the mini-skirt, the pocket calculator, the Raleigh Chopper bike and the cover of the Beatles’ Sergeant Pepper album.

Each of the top ten designs were championed by a public figure on last night’s show.

Viewers were asked to vote for their favourite from the top ten.

The winner is announced on March 16.

I think the recent theft of 53 million in England proves that practicing Grand Theft Auto is a good career choice...
