The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, P.C., M.P., the Member for Calgary Southwest and the Prime Minister of Canada, today announced that the Government of Canada would be launching an effort to pass legislation to introduce more severe sentences for street racing. This is the latest in a sequence of steps from the Government intended to increase sentences for serious crimes, in an effort to combat what the Government contends is a rising crime rate in Canada.

The Government is to introduce legislation for these purposes:
  • to add a particular offense to the Criminal Code of Canada for street racing, for the purpose of ensuring that street racing offences receive higher sentences for the commission of the crime;
  • to impose driving restrictions on persons convicted of street racing.

The Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper[/color], P.C., M.P.,]Let's be clear, street racing isn't about kids having fun. It's reckless, dangerous, and all too often it kills. [...] That is why our government will introduce legislation to tackle this serious problem head on.

:arrow: My Opinion Re: Street Racing

This is another endeavour in which I can support the Prime Minister; however, I do have some suggestions as to measures that I wold prefer be included in whatever legislation would be introduced to this end. First and foremost, I don't think that whatever restrictions are levied against someone convicted of street racing should be issued on a permanent basis (unless, perhaps, one has been convicted of multiple offences on the same type of charge). I have other concerns, but I have to restart the computer.
