Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti has hit the roof.
The outspoken veteran councillor issued a press release Monday slamming the city’s push for what he called a ‘roof tax’ and to hammer home his point, he released a photo of himself flipping the bird with both hands along with the message, “Tax this!!”
Mammoliti’s double finger salute comes as city staff study the possibility of slapping a stormwater charge on properties to help fund the capital costs for the city’s stormwater system.
Council voted to ask staff to study the charge last December. A report is due back in the spring of 2017.
Under the proposal, residential properties would pay a flat rate for the stormwater charge and stormwater management costs would be removed from the separate water rate.
But Mammoliti called the stormwater charge “another example of covert tax gouging.
“What does that mean in plain language? It means that if the tax and spend socialists on council get their way, starting around 2019, taxpayers with a roof (hard surface) will be paying more taxes ($130-$401 for residential properties) for a service that they already pay for,” Mammoliti stated.
“Currently taxpayers pay one charge for water and wastewater but staff are proposing that the city establish a dedicated stormwater charge.”
Although city staff argue the tax would be revenue neutral to homeowners, Mammoliti said he’s “not buying it now.”
"I feel that these new taxes and the underhanded way in which they are being implemented is totally unconscionable and I am proud to state that I will be voting against these and all other revenue tools,” he said.
On Tuesday, Mammoliti issued another press release claiming he’s been inundated with requests for a signed copy of his “tax revolt” photo.
“When several media outlets included the picture as part of their report, my office was instantly inundated with requests from residents requesting a signed copy,” he stated.
The York West (Ward 7) councillor planned to autograph photos for residents at Tuesday’s licensing committee meeting.
“I don't know if this picture will make the top ten Toronto City Hall collectibles list, but it sure seems to be popular with residents who are fed up with the endless barrage of hidden fees and taxes that is making it impossible for them to make ends meet,” he stated.
