Labour are running scared of Ukip at the moment, thinking that the anti-EU, anti-immigration party may well take Oldham West and Royton off them during the by-election on Thursday.

The first by-election of the 56th UK Parliament is taking place due to the death of the sitting Labour MP Michael Meacher on 21st October.

But, if they want to prevent Ukip winning the seat - and polls are showing Ukip in second place, not far behind Labour, and they could well nick it - they certainly aren't going the right way about it. The meeting was held in the Oldham West and Royton constituency ahead of Thursday's crucial by-election, which Labour is in danger of losing to Ukip. Critics (including Ukip MP Douglas Carswell, above) have said allowing the sexes to be split up at the party-run event was 'shameful' and accused of 'putting political correctness ahead of equality' in order to win votes. The event was in support of Jim McMahon, who is the party's candidate in Oldham West on Thursday.
