Because they don't USE teflon anymore, frypan makers and sellers don't seem to want to talk about it. Lawsuits, for one, and poor sales of their brands due to mistrust, is why they don't talk about it. However, many cheaper brands are still available,being sold off, before laws against them are made. The cheap brands are the worst due to processes that keep them from disintegrating. This is the WORST time to get a teflon frypan!

Stainless steel for frypans can be a hassle, but I use it on low heat and have NO PROBLEMS. Not a problem like cancer anyhow!!

Mistrust of the corporations indeed!! Even now, they have changed the name of the coating to PTFE, but it is nearly the same -"bad for you". PTFE is not safe either.

And have you heard that non-stick frypans is TOXIC TO BIRDS? Non-stick pans have emissions, and those emissions [gasses] kill birds. They all agree on that.

"Even frying margerine too hot will kill a bird" says the T-Fal website, so bird owners should know that non-stick coatings are not to be used where [pet] birds live in the house. Somehow, they are trying to convine us that using non-stick pans isn't a problem [because there is a potential problem anyways?]

SEE #36 in the list on this site for bird safety with Teflon pans:

Among the compounds released were a witches' brew of environmentally suspect chemicals. Besides trifluoroacetate they included:

* Polyfluorocarboxylic and polyfluorocarboxylic acids, a family of chemicals that includes one being phased out of Scotchguard and other products because it accumulates in the human body.
* Ozone-destroying CFCs.
* Fluorocarbons, which contribute to global warming by trapping heat in the atmosphere.
* Trifluoroacetate, or TFA, is known to be mildly toxic to some plants. Because it takes decades or centuries to break down, some scientists have speculated that it could accumulate and cause harm in certain locations, such as wetlands.

They didn't change the name to PTFE, it has always been PTFE.."teflon" is a specific brand of PTFE.

And people who burn things will always burn things, whether it's a teflon frying pan, or a piece of bacon.

You can't just decide to be scared of everything Teflon. You have to think a bit, too. If you're that dead set against PTFE and other chemicals, how on earth are you accessing the net?

I prefer cast iron myself. But that's only cause they make a much better 'bat' then those flimsy light teflon fry pans.

I only use cast iron frying pans and pots myself. I don't waste money on fancey looking expensive pots and pans. These cast irons last forever, they don't scratch or break when you drop them. Plus they make a good weapon if someone were to break in.....
