I actually never wanted to fit in....it never occurred to me.. i knew i was different than everyone....i always wanted the group to like me though...
i always had lots of friends and in a high school of over 2000 i bet there wasn't anyone who did not know me or of me....

I never did or acted like was expected or was to be done in order to be accepted....

I also never hurt anyone(intentionally) and always tried to find what was original in everyone around me....each person has a certain quality or charatistic that is unique and to be shared and explored...

I think people mess them selves up by trying to conform, and lose themselves....

Make a simple comparison, how many 4 year old boys do you see running around with hair long enough to have a pony tail, how many 4 year old girls?

It must be "the conditioning " ,not the children's conditioning but their parents'.

Fitting in is proof of being liked. Everybody wants to be liked. It means we're ok. It's why religions are successful. It tells an individual that they're belief system is right if others agree. It's the safety in numbers factor. Any group/herd/flock/ type animal (which we are) needs the safety in numbers thing. Intellectually we understand we don't need safety in numbers but instinct overrides that.

Twila,
You are speaking to the humanities choir.
The real understanding is in speaking of the spiritual to the spiritual inadequacies of the congregation.

But then, the question is, what are the spiritual truths?

That is the reason then for all the discussions.

I understand...this might sound weird ..but i was ostrisised for my religous beliefs at a young age...and enjoyed it.....it left me hell bent on not caring if i fit in even though i wanted to....and did...does that make sense.....there was a time when drugs got out of hand i quit dope...i had to leave a massive amount of friends to do it....i became a loner ...short lived by a couple of weeks for the very guy i first expieremented with dope came to me and asked if i could help him....together we carved out a niche of new people to hang with....people that gravitated to us.....
