It was announced today that on Friday, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D., the Governor General of Canada and the Chancellor and Commander of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces, is to invest forty-four more persons into the Order of Merit of the Police Forces — fifteen officers (with the post-nominals of O.O.M.) and twenty-nine members (noted with M.O.M.) are to be invested into the Order, which recognizes varying degrees of service in terms of the police forces. There is another stage in the Order, that of the commander (represented through the letters C.O.M.), but no investitures to that rank are to take place this Friday.

 My Opinion Re: Investitures to the Order

I have seen a great number of awards given out by Her Excellency, and having read the summaries of the services of these persons, I am proud to know that Canada is host to so many amazing, and dedicated, people. I congratulate those who are to be invested into the Order, and I hope that a great many more members of the forces aspire for such greatness in their endeavours, too.

Finder, it should be noted that the Order of Merit of the Police Forces separate from the Order of Canada. The Order of Canada recognizes persons for their contributions to Canada and to the world, whereas the Order of Merit of the Police Forces, in particular, is designed to recognize the excellence of those who contribute to law enforcement.

On that note, today, in her capacity as the Chancellor and Commander of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces, issued a speech in response to the investitures that she made today (as outlined in an above post, forty-three persons were invested into the Order — something that everyone should be proud of).

Canadians are blessed with so many riches that we tend to take things for granted—our water, our democratic institutions, our natural resources... and how efficiently our society functions.

:?: My Opinion Re: Investiture of Forty-Three to the Order

I think that Her Excellency is quite correct when she suggests that, perhaps, there are some things that the people of Canada can tend to take some things for granted; by way of example, many people can tend to argue that our system is not as democratic as we would wish. However, there are other nations on this world where democracy is in a state of chronic dysfunction, and we should count ourselves lucky to not be one of them. Our law enforcement authorities should not be one of those "taken-for-granted" institutions; these people risk their lives for Canada every day.
