Rob Ford says he will not ‘waste taxpayers’ money’ by hiring a driver

Mayor Rob Ford says he has no plans to hire a driver on the taxpayers’ dime, insisting that he can drive himself to work like everyone else in Toronto.

How the mayor gets around has been the burning issue at city hall after someone snapped a photo of the chief magistrate reading while behind the wheel of his SUV on the Gardiner Expressway last week. The mayor was unrepentant then, saying he is a busy man. His brother, Councillor Doug Ford, had vowed to get the mayor to enlist a driver, and the police chief has offered him a security detail. But on Tuesday, back from a trip to Edmonton and Calgary to watch football, Mr. Ford said he will not budge.

“I don’t believe in wasting taxpayers’ money,” he told reporters who had gathered in the foyer of city hall to hear him endorse Mooredale Lightning Gold 2000, a local boys soccer team vying for a BMO Team of the Week contest. “I don’t believe in going out and hiring someone, as the average costs around here is $50, $60,000, on driving me around. A million people a day go to work in this city and they drive themselves. I don’t see why I’m any different.” He said when he was elected mayor he was offered a car and a driver, which totaled “well over $100,000″ combined.

“I think that’s a waste of taxpayers’ money.”

Afterwards, Councillor Ford said he is giving up on trying to get his brother a driver. “I tried my hardest. Now that’s proof in the pudding about who actually makes decisions: it’s Rob, no mistake about it.”

Good for Ford.

Now if only he'd stop operating his vehicle, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

I was going to say he should just use his own money for a driver, but that is still taxpayer money. ;)

This is great and wonderful news.

The only thing that could make this OP better would have been to create a few, you know, paragraphs for smoother reading.

Oh sure, I know that the excitement to post as quickly as possible so others can share in our new found info can be overwhelming but all the same.

Just a thought.

But Yay Robbie.

Beats throwing the old bike in the trunk of the limo, and hopping out a few blocks from where you're going, to look like a super hipster. While piling up one of the highest limo bills in Toronto history, I guess.

You mean the HTA is not a suggestion? Somebody should tell the majority of drivers on the road that. Seriously.
How true that is.

But Yay Robbie.
People can say what they want about Rob, but at least he ain't fakin' it.

That gets my props.

Never thought I'd agree with Rob Ford on something. All of them should be driving themselves around unless they don't have a license.
