Wasn't it Harper who said he would promise to force byelections to defectors? So much for that.

First lie on the first day. I'm sure there'll be others.

The Globe and Mail says there was no such promise. Do you guys have a source?

Although Conservative-turned-Liberal Belinda Stronach's decision to cross the floor in the last sitting raised the ire of many Conservatives, Mr. Harper said during the recent campaign that he wouldn't force a by-election in such cases.

Interesting the reason he gives for the picks is the inclusion of the big cities in the cabinet which have no conservative representation. Does this fly?

I have no problem with the unelected Minister, it is allowed, but it is somewhat hypocritical of the floor crossing Liberal Cabinet minister. Here is what Harper said when Belinda crossed:

"We don't go out of our way to romance MPs to get them to cross the floor. Liberals will do anything to win.

"We are trying to create a principled party where people act in a principled way, and obviously we're fairly cautious about encouraging party jumping, because that's the kind of thing that generates cynicism.

"And frankly, when someone jumps, once you're not sure you can trust them the next time, so I would always handle that with an extraordinary degree of caution."

As a Conservative, I am very disappointed by this.
Not a great start for the new PM.

Harper is a liar, Harper is a liar.

:D

Always knew it, so that is why we should close his little chapter in history as soon as suitably possible and elect Jack Layton and the NDP.

David Emerson. Reading his profile I see no rat in his background. Apparently he was highly thought of in the Liberal ranks. He might have been a possible leadership liberal contender.

Would somebody give some insight upon his Bendict Arnold actions.

Durgan.

Have no clue, but the NDP guy is steamed. If this Emerson guy had run as a conservative, we would have 30 NDP MPS at least not 29. This should be made illegal or he should run in a by-election and get his ass kicked by the NDP.

My opinion regarding this situation is the same as it had been during the crossing of the Honourable Belinda Stronach — it is the right of any Member of Parliament to move to another party, if they believe that doing so would be in the best interest of their constituents.

To force a by-election whenever a Member is forced out of a caucus, or switches caucuses of their own volition, would be a costly and time-consuming exercise, and would be, in my honest opinion, not in the best interest of such a Member's constituents and of Canada.

RE: First day and already

Give Emerson sometime, maybe he would be an efficient and hardworking minister. I frankly dont care what party they are from as long as they are good at their job. Too bad it isnt possible for MPs to keep their party and still be in cabinet because there are some really talented people scattered across the parties that would have been really good picks for ministers

Technically speaking, Mechayahiko, the Prime Minister has the authority to appoint members of the Opposition as members of his or her Cabinet, keeping their own party status. That hasn't been done in recent memory, though.

It seems to me if the voters of Emerson's riding had wanted to send a Conservative to Ottawa, then that would have been their choice.
They voted Liberal, and sent a Conservative anyway...very odd circumstance. Recall legislation might help. And no matter what the cost,a re-election should be held.

Harper lied, well there is a surprise. The best I can hope for is that he at least appoints qualified people. Does anyone know who Harper appointed with the Defense Portfolio?

How come everyone's pointing fingers at Harper and not Emerson? I mean, the guy ran as a Liberal and then crossed the floor. In doing so, he doesn't quite strike me as squeaky clean. By the sounds of it though, he looks like a hard working guy, and I think Both the Conservatives, Canada and his constituents will probably be better off for it.

Unfortunately, when Harper campaigned on cleaning up the government and making politicians accountable for their actions, then he just accepts with open arms a defector from the Liberal camp, no worries.

It raises the ire of many who question Mr. Harpers conviction to his campaign promises. Especially on the first day of the job.

Emerson does deserve to be severely criticized and scrutinized for this action. I have said my peace on him in the "Emerson walks across the floor" thread.

HARPER DID NOT LIE!!!! Geez people, get your facts straight!!!

Not once did he say he would hold a bi-election in a situation like this. He made it very clear that he would not restrict the rights of members in this manner, even though he was affected by it at one of the worst possible times.

So PLEASE PEOPLE, don't post these unsubstantiated claims.

I didn't say he lied; he made a big freaking deal out of how wrong it was, then HE recruited Emerson.

Harper makes a big deal out of "reform" and "accountability", and then does the EXACT thing he criticized the Liberals for.

Harper has no ethics at all. He is already a disappointment, and an insult to the party.
