A popular Toronto event showcasing sci-fi, anime, horror, gaming and comics says it will go ahead this year, but it will be a scaled-back version.

Fan Expo Canada: Limited Edition is planning to run later than the annual event usually is held — was scheduled to be Aug. 26-29 — and will be over three days instead of four, Oct. 22-24 at the South Building of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

“We’re so close to being able to gather and celebrate fandom together but the dates we had been counting down to are just a bit too soon,” the organization says in a post on its website. “Toronto is on a path to safely reopen but now, more than ever, it’s important we all do our part.

“Expect the excitement of our regular event with exclusivity. To make sure this is safe, this event will be limited to 25,000 tickets, and once they’re gone, they’re gone.”

As part of Ontario’s recently announced three-stage plan to reopening, large gatherings can happen when the province achieves 70-80% of adults with one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 25% fully vaccinated — though the size of the gatherings has not been spelled out.

Fan Expo says current ticket holders will have their tickets automatically transferred to the new dates. Those who can’t make it and want a refund, can request one by June 30.

As for which celebrities will be on hand at the event, organizers say they are working on the guest list and will announce the lineup in the coming months.

The event’s original August 2020 dates as well as a planned scaled-back version for November were cancelled due to COVID.
