On April 6, 2006, Paul Szabo, M.P., the Member for Mississauga South, moved for leave to introduce Bill C-206, An Act to amend the Employment Insurance Act (extension of benefit period for parental leave) in the House of Commons. The Act, if enacted, would increase leave for a new parent from one year to two years, and would increase the maximum amount of leave (since it can be extended where a child is hospitalized) from two years to three.

Paul Szabo[/color], M.P.,]Mr. Speaker, children are our most important resource and raising those children well should be a key priority. All families and their circumstances are different and one model of child rearing does not fit all.

Therefore, families need as much flexibility, options and choices. It is estimated that 25% of our children will enter adult life with significant emotional, behavioural, academic or social problems. Therefore, investing in children, particularly in the first three years, is an imperative not an option.

I think 1 year is enough. I think they should increase the allowance instead.

If they're going that far it should be to 2.5 years. That's when daycares charge about $200 less per month (once kids are potty trained - no diaper changing).

RE: Extending Parental Le

I support this bill. I think parents need more time with their newborn children.

I don't have children but I have five siblings that do and I can honestly say that being a parent is the "Hardest Job god ever gave a human". For the females and males that decide to stay home with their children on Parental Leave I think 2 years is better for the child and the parent. One year to get into the swing of parenting and one year to recover.

If both parents work, one works full-time and one works 25 hours a week (5 days 5 hours each) and makes $15 per hour the part-timer will gross about $1650 per month. Take away deductions, transportation, clothing, lunches, then pay $700 per month (single child) for daycare of under 2.5 years.

I'm all for extending it out as far as possible.

Kreskin I really don't know how people manage child care on a middle to low income. It really must be hard.

How many people do you know working part time at fifteen dollars an hour? I would suggest not too many of them.

Aside from that, I don't know about this. To what extent is the public responsible for a life that you choose to create? If you don't have the ability to pay for it, is it our responsibility to suport you?

On the other hand, children are our future. Shouldn't we, as a society, do everything that we can to help them grow into productive members?

Hmm... Tough question.

I know what you mean. I think if it was just a matter of money that's one thing but kids (and the rest of us) would benefit from them not having to be in daycare on their first birthday.
