Famed author and Royal Family expert Dame Hilary Mantel fears that the monarchy is facing the “endgame” and is unlikely to outlast Prince William.

Mantel, 68, made the bombshell forecast in an interview with the Daily Telegraph. She has previously described Kate Middleton as “plastic.”

The institution is so out of step and rife with infighting, she said, maybe the only true believer left is Queen Elizabeth, who remains beloved across the planet.

“I wonder if she’s the only person who really believes in the monarchy now, and I’m sure she believes with all her heart,” the author of Wolf Hall told the newspaper.

She said she believes the Queen should have abdicated years ago and allowed Prince Charles to reign.

“I understand she thinks of this as a sacred task … It’s a conflict because most of the world sees the Royal Family as a branch of show business,” Mantel said.

And she doesn’t hold out much hope for the institution.

“I think it’s the endgame. I don’t know how much longer the institution will go on,” she said. “No other family would be expected to parade a very elderly, newly-widowed lady before the TV cameras, and yet it’s taken for granted that’s what will happen.”

She added: “Just as it’s taken for granted that a new Royal mother will appear beaming on the hospital steps within a day of giving birth.

“I’m not sure if it will outlast William. So I think it will be their last big era. There’s no legitimate public interest behind it.”

Meanwhile, another insider said that Prince Harry may have blown his last chance to settle issues with his brother and father.

Both Prince Charles and Prince William remain furious over Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Longtime Royal Family writer Charlie Rae said Harry now looks like a “rabbit caught in the headlights,” Express.co.uk reported.

TalkRADIO host Kevin O’Sullivan told Rae: “We read that Harry was shocked by the frosty reception he got from some members of the Royal Family.”

Rae replied, according to the Daily Express: “Some literally turned their back on him. He was stunned by this — I’m not sure why that was a surprise to him.

“It must be occurring to him how frozen out he is, how he has turned his back on his former life. There is a suggestion that when he came back a few weeks ago, he was reminded of his old life.”

Rae said the ginger-haired prince is a fish out of water in his wife’s beloved California.

“Out in the U.S., Harry looks like a startled rabbit caught in the headlights,” Rae said. “I believe that this is a problem that will never go away; it will not be solved.

“I do not believe that William and Charles will be extending their open arms again to Harry in the light of what he said. They slagged off Kate. I think it’s too far now.”

The monarchy will last well after King William V. The last time England and Scotland were republics - 1649 to 1660 - they became a Puritan dictatorship under the leadership of Oliver Cromwell and then his son Richard. Cromwell's Roundheads were right to overthrow the Stuarts but made a hash of things when they took over from the Stuarts, leading to the people overthrowing Richard Cromwell and re-installing the monarchy, albeit a constitutional one rather than a Stuart-style Absolute one. The Puritan Republic banned theatres and other sorts of fun and even Christmas. It's because of that reason that the British people are unlikely to want to get rid of the monarchy again anytime soon.
