Europe is certainly a hotbed of late, france again the victim as a truck plows through innocent folks and turkey faces a coup which could really set off major fireworks. Are nato partners obliged to intervene when a gov is threatened by its' own military?

Within my memory, there has been coups in Greece, Portugal, and Turkey nore than once. The military junta in Greece was especially brutal and thousands "disappeared". The Portugese one wasn't much better. NATO carried on, regardless.

Whilst Turkey is a member of UEFA and Eurovision and the EU desperately wants it to become a member state, 97% of Turkey is in Asia. Just 3% of it is in Europe. But that's immaterial anyway. Europe and Asia are not continents. They are both part of the vast continent of Eurasia. Britain is in the same continent as Mongolia, Japan, China and Indonesia.

Thanks Blackleaf an informative link, appears nato allows domestic matters to sort themselves out and only react if it's a foreign intervention. This coup short circuited so quickly that nato wouldn't even have time to think about pulling troops from russias' doorstep to give erdogan a hand anyway.
Erdogan is as crooked as a dogs' hind leg but nato abides him killing kurds, peddling hot isis oil and blackmailing the eu on refugees because the u.s. needs his air base and its' strategic location.
Maybe kerry and lavrov finally sorted out good guys from bad guys and can start to eliminate the bad guys taking some heat off syria and turkey if barac can just get over his assad has to go mania.

There weren't enough of the army top brass involved for the coup to be successful.

Over the last few decades the arrmy has seen itself as leaning towards Europe rather than the Middle East and traditionally doesn't want an Islamist president in charge, hence its uprising against Erdogan.

There'll be a bloodbath now. Erdogan will use this as an excuse to get rid of those who are against him. He's even planning on executing many of the plotters even though Turkey no longer has the death penalty.

Y'know erdogan is such a low life it would not surprise me if he staged the whole thing, sacrificing a few flyboys and civilians would mean nothing to him, even a third rate coup organizer would have been far better prepared. Report on RT cited soldiers saying they had no clue on any coup attempt they were told they were going on a training mission and video accounts showing passive troops bear this out. Erdogan the sole benefactor now able to weed out more adversaries, he already insults the opposition, hunts kurds, jails reporters and can now purge the military which he hates and turf judges he feels are too just. He acted super fast on his purge suggesting to me at least he had his list at the ready.
