England have quashed rumours that they will pull out of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India for security reasons.

There were rumours that security chiefs feared that the England team would be a target for Pakistani extremists in the Games in Delhi. This would be the first time in the Commonwealth Games' 80 year history that England have pulled out.

But England manager Ann Hogbin last night denied the country would be withdrawn. She saidl: ‘That is definitely not the case. Our current and strong intention is to field a team for the Games in Delhi 2010.’

The Commonwealth Games are like the Olympics but for Commonwealth nations only.

In 2006, 2002 (in Manchester) 1998 and 1990, England finished second in the medals table behind Australia with 110, 166, 138 and 130 medals respectively. On each of those occasions, Canada finished third. Canada finished second behind Australia in the 1994 Commonwealth Games when they were held in British Columbia. England finished third.

In the Olympics, Great Britain competes as a team, but in the Commonwealth Games England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland compete separately.

Glasgow, in Scotland, hosts the 2014 Commonwealth Games. It'll be the third time since 1970 that Scotland would have hosted the event.

England insist there will be no snub to Commonwealth Games in India next year

England bosses have been forced to deny claims they would pull the team out of next year's Commonwealth Games in India over fears of a terrorist attack.

It was reported that security chiefs feared the English team would be a target of Pakistani extremists and that they could not guarantee the safety of competitors such as double Olympic swimming champion Rebecca Adlington and world champion diver Tom Daley in New Delhi in October.

Adlington: Hopes to compete in Delhi

Senior Whitehall sources claimed there was ‘virtually no chance’ England would send a team to India as the athletes would not be prepared to ‘risk their lives’.

It would be the first time England have not competed in the Games in its 80-year history. But England manager Ann Hogbin last night denied the country would be withdrawn and told Sportsmail: ‘That is definitely not the case. Our current and strong intention is to field a team for the Games in Delhi 2010.’

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson had said he had ‘serious concerns’ about security arrangements on a visit to the Indian capital last month.

However, Hogbin insisted the English Commonwealth Games organising body would continue to work with the authorities to ensure the safety of a team of over 100 competitors.

Hogbin said: ‘Of course we have a duty of care to the athletes and other team members which we take very seriously.

‘Despite having been given extensive briefings from relevant authorities, we have not received any indication we should not participate in the Games and we will continue to work hard to put in place the best arrangements for our team.’

The British Commonwealth is a totally artificial, unnatural and unreal anachronism.

The sooner it is dissolved, the better.
