A Calgarian strolling through a back alley in Bowness Monday came upon a small pet carrier and was shocked what he saw inside.

There was a dog in distress locked inside the small crate.

The man brought the dog – which appears to be an adult male Maltese-like breed – into Calgary Metal Recycling knowing one of the workers, Ashleigh Marin, is training to be a veterinary technician.

“He just reached in, he didn’t know if it was dirty inside,” Marin said. “He didn’t expect to find a dog in there.”

When Marin went to examine the dog, she was stunned by what she saw. The emaciated dog was drenched in its own urine, had overgrown toenails, irritated skin, and fur so matted it could barely see or defecate, she said.

“He was in a lot of pain,” Marin said, adding she immediately took the dog to a local veterinary clinic.

The pup had no collar or visible ID and the vet couldn’t detect a microchip.

Marin posted the dog’s photo on the YYC Pet Recovery Facebook site and already people are offering to adopt the canine.

But Marin said she will be contacting the Calgary Humane Society to launch an investigation.

“I’m upset. All of my coworkers, we’re all pretty upset, obviously angry that this poor tiny dog was left in the kennel, left to die,” she said.

Brad Nichols, senior manager of animal cruelty investigations at the Calgary Humane Society, said he encourages anyone who finds a dog in distress to either bring the animal to a veterinary clinic or contact the humane society.
This emaciated and matted dog was found locked in a crate in Bowness on Monday.
