This is news? This happens far more than you might imagine. My wife is a former social worker who specialized in elder care and it was not uncommon to separate spouses, particularly if they required different levels of care.

It's scary to imagine what can happen once people have control over your lives like this, but it happens. And the more Canadians age the more this sort of thing will happen, particularly if governments do not sufficiently fund new residential care facilities, or encourage the private sector to build. It pains me to say this, but looking to the south - Texas and Florida come to mind - we are FAR behind when it comes to caring for our elderly. Something as simple as legislation requiring inspections, family planning meetings and documented treatment planning is desperately needed.

I'm a 30-something male who is pretty (small c) conservative, but I know one day I will get old and I would love to know that there will be some sort of infrastructure designed to take care of me, not simply warehouse me with no regard for my physical or emotional needs.

I urge you to keep this in mind and raise it with your local politician - at the municipal, provincial or federal level.
