Scientists have corrected the genetic fault that causes Down's syndrome – albeit in isolated cells – raising the prospect of a radical therapy for the disorder.

In an elegant series of experiments, US researchers took cells from people with DS and silenced the extra chromosome that causes the condition. A treatment based on the work remains a distant hope, but scientists in the field said the feat was the first major step towards a "chromosome therapy" for Down's syndrome.

Very good news , especially now when we see people waiting until they are considered older to have children.

A scary step forward for man kind. If a plausible therapy is developed, will parents be withholding medical care if they don't 'fix' their 'broken' children?

Proves there's nothing so good that some zealots can't make a bad thing of it.

The deaf community has a similar problem here. When a child is born deaf, its parents will be blitzed by doctors, audiologists, and every other kind of specialist insisting that the child be "fixed" with a cochlear implant. The deaf community likes to think its members aren't abnormal or subnormal.
