oh yea.....and now we will be able to pass stiffer criminal sentencing, arm our border guards, and put more police on the streets.....the prospect of increased military spending will also be good news for Alberta's who strongly support our armed forces!!!!

You have a minority not a majority there. Kyoto has to go through parliment, and because most Canadians like the environment, I wouldn't be surprised that the Conservatives would lose if they try to repeal it and end up in another election.

Would a motion to repeal the Kyoto Accord be a matter of confidence?

Good question.

And even if it wasn't there are only a select few people who would benefit, the corporate organizations that run all conservative parties. So if they did appeal Kyoto, then they would lose alot of Canadian support and they would lose the next election.

Yes. One of the main things he said he will do is remove natural resources (oil) from the equalization formula. Alberta will keep more money. His other big thing is devolution of powers to the provinces, which Alberta is one of the main proponents of (along with Quebec).

I think the other thing Alberta wants to see is exporting of their Values. Social conservative, less governement programs, less taxation. Getting rid of the Gun programs.

My question, what aren't they getting?

Didn't he also say to Sask that their resource revenue would be taken out out of equalization? If so, he pretty much has to do it for everyone, I would think.

I think Albertans are going to be very disappointed. Now that Harper is in power, he will want to stay there. I don't care how much money and oil Alberta has; one thing that it doesn't have enough of to have real power is people. There are 308 seats in parliament; Alberta has 28. 9%! 9% of the seats for 9% of the population. Power in this country isn't distributed based on GDP and wealth; it is based on population. Harper knows this, so he will make sure he still caters to the 67% of the population that lives in Ontario and Quebec.

Alberta will reap some advantages, but it will most certainly not be at the expense of Ontario and Quebec.

If Albertans really want to help their own cause, they need to head into the bedroom and just go at it like mad and start mass-producing new little Albertans!

I can't see how it would be unless Harper declared it to be a matter of confidence.

From my understanding only money bills are considered confidence motions.

I'd like to thank Triple_R, and say that in many ways he is correct, I'd know I've lived in Alberta (and also in Ontario, Sask and BC) have friends in Alberta and they don't act like spoiled children. IN fact, they are very devoted to Canada, but deathly afriad of the next idea to suck money out of the Albertan economy before they get the chance to benifit from their economic profit. People don't realise that Canadian's move to Alberta to reap the rewards of its economy and they will leave just as fast when oil collapses. They need to use their money now to diversify their economy and build their culture, or we will have one more provice that needs transfer payments.

RE: Does anyone HONESTLY think that the Conservative gov't..

colin,

"spoiled child" refered to the politics of alberta. all the rest of us ever hear is about "we want whats ours" "give me, give me, give me", like a spoiled child having a tantrum.

on "sucking money out", when did that ever really happen? Don't say NEP, the NEP was not the cause of the 80's collapse no matter how much some in alberta like to blame it. the cause was global economics and the fact that alberta never diversified its economy. It is STILL like that. A fundamentally narrow focused, short sighted province that politically only is interested in milking the land dry as fast as possible with no consideration of what comes next or the damage done.

I too know people in alberta and have spent time there. I also know what it is like hearing the whining of Ralphy-boy being from the coast. I have lived In Ontario as well to make that comparison, since we are listing off residencies as some claim to knowledge (i have residences in BC, AB,and ON)

I believe that money bills, key program legislation (legislation that the Prime Minister declares confidence-warranting) and the Speech from the Throne are confidence issues.

I can easily predict the scenario 3 years from today. Eventually Harper after pretending to be a good centrist for awhile is going to show his true colours and attempt to implement Fraser Institute (www.fraserinstitute.ca) and CCCE (www.ceocouncil.ca) inspired legislation to degrade the powers of the federation. An election will be held and the CP will be trounced by the Liberals, sending them back into the wilderness for a decade or two. Harper will resign as leader and take a seat beside daddy (Preston) as a member of the Fraser Institute. Alberta will continue to bitch and squall for all of eternity that nobody ever listens to them.

Mmm.. I've got to disagree there, that spoiled child would most definitely be Quebec.

Albertans should come out better with the Conservatives in power, simply because that's mostly who voted them in. No-one would complain if the Liberals started pushing for things that benefited Urbanites and immigrants, or when the Bloc pushed for things that benefited Quebec, so why complain when the Cons push for things that benefit their constituencies?

Politicians are there to work for those who elected them.
