"If This is a Man" by Primo Levi

"But the mothers stayed up to prepare the food for the journey with tender care, and washed their children and packed the luggage: and at dawn the barbed wire was full of children's washing hung out in the wind to dry. Nor did they forget the diapers, the toys, the cushions and the hundred other small things which mothers remember and which children always need. Would you not be the same? If you and your child were going to be killed tomorrow, would you not give him to eat today?"

David.

There's actually 2 books that I read titled "David"

First is about a baby who's circumcision is botched so they make him a girl (didn't work. Imagine that!)
And another about a little boy who's father lights him on fire. he survives having 90% of his body burned. very very disturbing.

My disturbing read was more of the gross-out variety. It was a horror novel about an outbreak of mutant, flesh-eating slugs. Bleah.

I think Jo Rowling must have read the same book - she makes reference to flesh-eating slugs in the Harry Potter series! :)
