Foreign Affairs Minister Stéphane Dion focused his most recent speech at the Canada in Global Affairs Conference at the University of Ottawa on the deep implications of climate change on security issues and regional instability, including by creating a fertile economic and social environment for Islamic unrest, Islamic revolutions and the emergence of Islamic global terrorist movements that have openly declared war on Western civilization.

Without mentioning the words “Islam” and “terrorism”, Dion provided his own theory (based on the “best experts”) to the “Arab Spring” (the series of uprisings lead by radical Islamic movements that have been rattling the Muslim world since 2011), the civil war in Syria between the radical Shiite–Alawite Muslim coalition and the radical Sunni Muslim groups, and the civil war in Somalia in which Islamic radical groups took control over large swaths of the country.

“How many people really know [the role of climate change on security]? For most, conflict and unrest have nothing to do with climate change. Yet look at the facts,” said Dion.

Dion is not the first to draw a parallel between changing climate conditions in Syria, Iraq, Iran and other parts of the Middle East. In Syria alone:

"A historic drought afflicted the country from 2006 through 2010, setting off a dire humanitarian crisis for millions of Syrians. Yet the four-year drought evoked little response from Bashar al-Assad’s government. Rage at the regime’s callousness boiled over in 2011, helping to fuel the popular uprising. In the ensuing chaos, ISIS stole onto the scene, proclaimed a caliphate in late June and accelerated its rampage of atrocities including the recent beheadings of three Western civilians."

"In Syria, there is demonstrated scientific evidence that all of these were be affected by changes in local climate. For that reason, security planners in the DoD, Intelligence community, and around the world call climate change an “accelerant of instability” – the climate does not cause instability alone, but it does make other impacts worse."

"There is evidence that the 2007−2010 drought contributed to the conflict in Syria. It was the worst drought in the instrumental record, causing widespread crop failure and a mass migration of farming families to urban centers. Century-long observed trends in precipitation, temperature, and sea-level pressure, supported by climate model results, strongly suggest that anthropogenic forcing has increased the probability of severe and persistent droughts in this region, and made the occurrence of a 3-year drought as severe as that of 2007−2010 2 to 3 times more likely than by natural variability alone. We conclude that human influences on the climate system are implicated in the current Syrian conflict."

The simple fact is, the US made the mess when they invaded Iraq and captured Saddam. HE was the only real stabilizing influence in the Middle East outside of Israel. Sometimes it's best to just let sleeping dogs lay.
I mean think about it, the US invaded Iraq, in part because it used chemical weapons on the Kurds in the north and killed some 15,000-20,000 or something like that. How many people overall have been killed since the debacle in Iraq?


What makes things even more interesting is a CIA report that was released after the invasion of Iraq, detailing the gas attack on the Kurds from a few years prior. It stated that the Kurds were working with operatives from the Iranian military. To what extent they either didn't say or it had been redacted before publishing. Which would certainly be something that would provoke Saddam to launch a gas attack, hoping to also get a few Iranians in the process as well.
All of that is because the north of Iraq is a very strategic area. It contains the bulk of the fresh water for the entire region. And right now, to make matters even worse, the Mosul damn is rapidly reaching the point where it will fail. From what my wife told me she read in the news the other day, they're talking a matter weeks before a catastrophic failure.
