Dick Cheney - What a man

Written by Andrew Cameron

18 November 2004

Well, surprise, surprise. The “War” President has been re-elected. In your face Kerry, I won, I won!!! Four more years! Dubya phoned Terry Blair to give him the news, congratulations said Terry, but I hope you are not intending to invade anywhere else, it’s not too popular over here and I’ll probably be having an election myself next Spring. Dubya said no, not before Christmas and by the way, out of interest, does Sherry have a black leather cat woman suit like Condi has?

The man who has never been near the angry whiff of gunpowder or been on the receiving end of shot and shell. Probably deliberately through the influence of his rich and powerful father, who, according to rumour managed to get him a nice safe commission in the National Guard for the duration of the Vietnam War, like so many rich American families. Many of those who died in that useless conflict were from the poor and ethnic minorities in American society, drafted to serve, of course.

Doesn’t American protocol make you smirk? When the non-military “War” President steps off Air Force One he snaps a salute to the assembled Marines, whatever, who salute back. In Britain it is just not done to salute unless in uniform. Have you ever seen the Queen snap a salute to her Generals? No, she shakes hands. Good protocol. There are a couple of Royals who salute on parade days when in uniform. Prince Andrew – ok, he did his military service with some shot and shell in the Falklands. Prince Philip – Yes, he served in World War Two under fire in the Royal Navy. Prince Charles – Pass.

I saw that ‘Global Vote 2004’ organized a worldwide internet vote on the American Presidential election. Fascinating stuff. 113,552 people from 191 countries took part. The results were: Kerry 77%, minor candidates (including Nader) 16%, Dubya 9%.

Patently Osama won the election for the “War” President. The timing of his video was perfect. Frightened the hell out of the American public. I thought it was suspicious: it looked a lot like Condi Rice in a beard. Surprise, surprise, the election is over and she’s up for Secretary of State!

During the campaign Dick Cheney came up with the most memorable quote about Kerry. “No matter how much lipstick you put on a pig, it’s still a pig” Maybe he was referring to his recently ‘outed’ lesbian daughter.

Dubya may not be that bright but the man behind him, making the bullets, is Dick ‘Head’ Cheney, long time professional politician, and positively dangerous. He holds one of the most powerful jobs in the World despite overseeing one disaster after another over decades. He has served under Nixon, Ford, and Dubya Senior. Nixon was disgraced and none of the others re-elected. Ronald Reagan was, surprisingly, bright enough not to have him in his administration.

Some of his finer moments:-

Cheney voted against calling for Nelson Mandela’s release from prison.
He has twice been arrested for drink driving.
He backed tax advantages for energy corporations.
He fought efforts to clean up hazardous waste.
As Defence Secretary under Dubya’s Dad he turned over Military duties to private companies.
He put intellectual chums without military experience into key posts in the Pentagon.
He was boss of Halliburton, leading it to disaster in five years when he bought a subsidiary with a multi-million Dollar asbestos legal action.
Halliburton struck lucrative deals during his reign with Sadam Hussein and Colonel Gaddafi.
He should have relinquished his Halliburton association when in political office. He still gets $100,000 a year from them.
The Bush-Cheney administration awarded Halliburton $5.5 Billion of contracts for work in Iraq.
Jimmy Carter defeated Ford for President, who had Cheney as Chief of Staff, by 2,000,000 votes. Ford said, “Listening to Cheney was the biggest political mistake of my life”.
He managed to get five deferments from service in the Vietnam War.
One of these was to avoid a new rule which said that married men without children were no longer exempt from service. Nine months and two days after this announcement the first of his daughters was born.
John Kerry did serve with honour in Vietnam yet Cheney has the effrontery to constantly challenge his war record.
He was just one of twenty-one members of congress to oppose the Safe Drinking Water act.
He is trying to get the Navy to pay his $120,000 a year electricity bill for his 33-room mansion on the basis that it is on the grounds of the Naval Observatory.
He opposed extending the Civil Rights act, which was designed to give blacks the same rights as whites.
He voted to protect citizen’s rights to own armour-piercing bullets.
He was one of four Congressmen to vote against banning plastic guns, which are invisible to metal detectors.
He dropped out of Yale University due to the amount of partying he did, arrogantly believing he could bluff his way through.
He told Senator Patrick Leahy to “Go f**** yourself” during an exchange on the Senate floor.

There is some hope.

He has had four heart attacks and has a pace maker.

Somewhat bizarrely his own daughter may inadvertently be the undoing of his ambitions to be President. The Republican Party depends heavily on votes from the ‘fundamentalist’ Christian right. They don’t like – very vocally – girls who play stickies with other girls. One of his daughters has just come out of the toilet.

But as number two, with another four years, if anything happened to Dubya he moves straight into pole position. Is that scary or what?
