TORONTO - A man found with fatal stab wounds may have fallen on a knife in his pocket, Toronto Police say.
Police were called to the scene by a passerby who spotted the victim, Const. Victor Kwong said.
Officers found the man without vital signs at the top of a staircase in a parking garage at a Leaside townhouse complex around 12:10 a.m. Thursday.
"Initially, they suspected foul play, but now the theory that is being investigated is the victim may have accidentally done the damage," Kwong said. "He may have slipped and the stab wounds may have been caused by a knife he was carrying in his pocket."
A wound to the femoral artery, in the inner thigh, could prove fatal, he said.
The man was rushed from the Laird Dr. and Eglinton Ave. complex to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police continue to treat the death as suspicious, and while the homicide unit has been notified, it has not been classified as murder.
An autopsy will be scheduled for today or tomorrow, Kwong said.
