I'm not a fan of Bob Rae, few are, though many have mixed feelings about him. As many of us know he is running for the Liberal Leadership. Now the link I'm posting is not what I got most of my info from today as the document I read was in the Toronto star and I could not find the same one online, but one which is close enough to get down to the point.

Bob Rae as we know was the only Democrat to be PM of Ontario ever. Many on the right and left just don't like him because during his time in office he seemed to shift from hard left to the right and then just not full fill his promises and the whole government itself seemed to be confused and always over reacted to anything happening. He started in Ontario as an old guard socialist and left as a fiscal conservative who totally bought into Mike Harris Common sence revolution, and the NDP platform during that election was a softer version of that platform actually. One of the reason (among many) why many unions shift their support to the liberals during that election).

Now I am not a Fan of Bob Rae but what he has been saying about Social Democracy has echoed what I have said myself in the past. He himself though he is running for the Liberal leadership says he is still a social democrat. But he adds that socialists and social democrats like the NDP have to wake up and come into the 21 centry. He said he learned from his mistakes and said the old ways of socialism just don't anymore. Their is no real black and white complete right and wrong. As a social democrat (and even socialists) we should be embracing the free market economy (though by doing so we should make it fair and look after the workers too) and we should control the unions to a certain degree and even make cut backs in area's where services are merely burocratic and what not.

Wow Bob Rae almost converts me to want to join the Liberal party and even vote for him if he were to win. But really from the first day to the last day of his government, his government was running ontario as if they had no clue what they were doing. I don't think Bob Rae should be the PM of Canada as I do not think he has the B@lls to actually push for things the left or the right may not want. He seems to waver a lot back and forth and I really can't see him even winning the leadership race. But I must give him credit, he is totally right on what hesaid about social democrats and socialist. By in large most of these groups around the world are moving away from the absolute, but many members I'd say in the Democrats tend to still think of things as completely right or completely wrong. Though at the same time, so do conservatives. *shrugs*

I'll be voting NDP even if Bob Rae is the Liberal leader. But their are a few Liberal leaders who might have a chance in getting my support.

RE: Could Bob Rae be righ

I don't like Bob Rae. Why is someone who was part of the NDP, running for the Liberal leadership?

I am a fan of Bob Rae, though I don't always agree with him. He's smart, experienced and has guts. Whether he'd make a good leader of the Liberals isn't clear to me yet, though he'd be my first choice after Frank McKenna declined. It doesn't matter anyway, it'll be a while before I consider voting Liberal. Last time was in 1988...

Well the same reason the ex-minster of health was the leader of the prvincial NDP.

He left the NDP in 2002 over the palistine issue. But really his last year in office and his comments afterwards shows he has moved to the centre and is even somewhat conservative on the economic side of things, as he supported Mike Harris's common sence revolution, economically.

pastafarian, I'd vote for Bob Rae if I thought he had the ability to stick with one issue and not mess things up. He didn't do that bad while he was PM and the province was in the worst recession just before he took office since the 1930's. So he had a hard job from the get go, but he also kept moving from left to right and ended up pissing off every single side. In a sence with Bob Rae as the Liberal leader and if he ever became PM of Canada this would be the best thing for the New Democrats I'm sure because the Liberals would lose almost all credibility. He would do with the federal liberals as he did with the Ontario NDP. At least the former health minster for the liberals didn't destory his provincial party. lol

Re: Bob Rae as Leader

Today the New Democratic Party of Canada released a statement in terms of the decision of the Honourable Bob Rae, P.C., O.C., to run for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada. The party criticized his decision, pointing out some perceived discrepencies between the statements of the previous Government of Canada, in contrast to their conduct.

The Web site for the [color=orange said:
New Democratic Party of Canada[/color]]Rae said: "Those who advocate ... the fatal weakening in capacity of our national government, need to be challenged as never before. Because failing to do so will mean the end of Canada as we know it." (source)

Liberal record: The Liberal strategy for national unity was to unilaterally cut over $25 billion from provincial transfers for social programs, to which some premiers remarked "The Canada that we have known is no more. It has been gradually fraying at the edges for some time, but I think we should not underestimate the historic nature of what Mr. Martin announced." – Bob Rae, Toronto Star, 1 March 1995

That;s like taking quotes from Harper back in 1996. I'm sure Bob Rae has changed a great deal since 1995, as I'm sure most of us have too.

From what I have seen and read about Mr Rae he has changed a lot. Though I think it is immportant to know what these people such as Harper or anyone has said in the past, I think too looking too deeply into it is somewhat..... misleading. Now I know there are fantic partisans in the Democrats as there are in any party which would quote anything from any time to discredit someone. I don't fault the partisan who posted that but I would take what Bob Rae said over 10 years ago as something he had said ten years ago and knowing how much he has changed politically I would not take that into consideration too much.

I still wouldn't trust Bob Rae to be a good PM. If he has changed maybe but he was just too chaotic. I'm not sure what we get a Economic Mike Harris/Bush or a economic Hugo Chavas. We'd get a very good social liberal (Social democrat) though
