Because in the American elections, they arnt elected. Its the president that appoints anyone he wants to certain jobs.
I can,t see anything good comming out of this . Rice is far more hawkish than Powell ever was . Looks to me that Dubya wants to be surrounded by yes men .
I imagine Powell was holding out in case Bush lost the election but, like so many of his fellow americans, has given up hope.
The picture of Powell after the announcement said so much. For the first time in I don't know how long, he looked happy and relaxed. The transformation from cold and withdrawn to this newer, happier, self was extraordinary, really.
Things are about to get a whole lot uglier. There will be no dissenting voices in this new cabinet, nobody willing to raise a doubt or offer an alternative.
I don't like Powell much...he first came to national attention as one of the men who tried to cover up the Mi Lai massacre in Vietnam...but compared to the rest of these evil bastards he's a saint.

I almost found him to be worst than the others, in a strange sort of way. The others are what they are (god help us all), but he seems more of a man doomed to be something he didn't want to be, someone who had sold his soul to the devil and was haunted by the images.
And the winner is Condaleeza Rice. She has get through the confirmation hearings yet, but that's just a formality at this point.

My first thought was, 'she is going to be so terrible at the job'. Then reality hit: what the hell, her boss is terrible at his job, so she might as well suck at hers, too.
I think it's a loss that Powell resigned, not that I was a real fan of him, but he did have good relations with Europe, contrary to Bush and Donald "Old-Europe-bad-New-Europe-good" Rumsfeld.
I think we should all send her nasty e-mails and see if we can make her cry. ;-)
She will likely destroy any chance at resolution of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. She isn't strong enough to even attempt to counter the wishes of the Christian right to make Israel whole so the can float up to heaven naked and frolic with the cherubs.

I am beginning to wonder if anyone or anything is strong enough to counter the wishes of the Christian right at the moment.They are on a roll, or to paraphrase General McArthur, full speed ahead, damn the torpedoes... and screw anybody who gets in the way.

I'm not joking, Mog...people in the White House, including George Bush, belong to a sect of Christianity that actually believes that.
Stopping them will require removing them from power and removing their base supporters. At this point I think an impeachment could only acheive the former. The US is in bad shape though, when it fails the latter will happen. Most likely it will happen violently, unfortunately.
Count me on that too, Rev. What makes me laugh sometimes is the delightful way you have of expressing things. It can give even a very serious comment an amusing edge, and this is a good thing, it makes your stuff very readable.
