Councillor Michelle Holland wants to make sure Toronto doesn’t have a blind spot once automated vehicles hit the city’s streets in significant numbers.
“This is technology that’s just literally around the corner,” she said Sunday. “Within five years we’ll be seeing AVs (automated vehicles) on the street.”
Holland will call on the city’s executive committee on Thursday to set up a task force to examine changes needed to ensure Toronto is ready for an influx of driverless cars.
“So we’re ahead of the game and not behind the eight ball like we were with Uber,” said Holland.
Automated vehicles “will be the reality on our roadways within a relatively short time period,” says her motion to the committee.
Driverless technology could be used in private cars, public transit vehicles and even garbage trucks.
“We have to make sure that the technology they’re putting in the city and the money that we’re spending is congruent with that type of new technology that’s coming through the pipeline,” Holland said.
The point is to prepare for “the introduction and extensive use of automated vehicles by private users, the public and private sector entities,” says Holland’s motion.

Back in the old days, your horse knew the way home. If you beat your horse, it would choose a route with lots of low branches. I wonder what an abused automobile will do to you? Go through every single drive-through and order the most expensive item?
