Toronto cop Steve Izzet resigns before he can be fired for sexual harassment
Suspended Toronto Police Staff-Insp. Steve Izzett resigned from the force Tuesday — 25 minutes before he was to be fired as part of his sentencing.
Izzett, a 30-year veteran of Toronto Police, was found guilty in March of misconduct for sexually harassing a female sergeant under his command and then trying to destroy computer files to cover it up.
In a surprise move, Izzett, who was 49 in May, delayed the sentencing because he wished to be present for it and asked to read a statement.
“I am resigning effective immediately for health reasons,” Izzett said Tuesday at the police tribunal. “I am in a great deal of pain. The process has been long. The finality of these matters ... are ended with my resignation. I had planned on appealing, but with my health ... it was touch and go.”
